Watch Settings -> Display & Brightness -> Touch Lock
Is this what you are looking for?
No that is touch lock, The auto lock used to lock the device after a set amount of time maybe 15 seconds or so. Without auto lock on you may inadvertently hit the buttons to pause or stop a run/workout during the activity itself. Especially during long runs where you may go through various screen pages to check different data or mapping.
Auto lock has been removed from the latest generation of Garmin watches (like FR970 and Fenix 8).
For a while, Fenix 8 actually had the auto lock functionality but not the setting in the UI, which meant that some people had auto lock enabled with no way to turn it off (e.g. due to transferring their settings from an older device to their new Fenix 8). It seems that a firmware update probably removed the functionality completely though.
See this thread for more details: Auto Key Lock During Activity
However, I made a website that would allow you to turn on the auto lock setting if it exists in your watch's settings file (that's a big if). Even if the auto lock setting is turned on in this way, it's not guaranteed that the auto lock functionality would actually work.
There's nothing to lose by trying it though - it's a 5 minute procedure. All you need to do is connect your watch to a PC or Mac using the charging cable and follow the instructions on the site:

If you end up trying it, please let me know whether it works or not.
