Auto Key Lock During Activity

The Fenix 8 seems to be missing the “Auto Key Lock” during activity. There is a screen lock, but not the keys.

I used this for all activities on my Fenix 7 to avoid accidentally stopping/pausing/lapping during an activity.

I’ve checked the manual and searched - have I just not found it, or is it missing?

  • Yep, this option is gone. Whether that's a bug or intentional, not sure

  • Hmm. That seems poor.. I’d imagine lots of people used this.

This is making me question if I want to keep my new 8 now…at least until they put it back with a software update..

  • The only consolation might be that the fenix 8 makes an audible sound when an activity is paused. That won't be much help if in the water, or a noisy place, or if you're listening to music. But if you're hiking in a quiet place, you might notice it.

  • When you do screen lock, keys will be also locked.
I don't remember in any previous models I had it was "auto key lock" function available.

  • This isn’t what I experience. The function is “touch lock” and it stops screen presses but it doesn’t lock the buttons. You could still accidentally press the stop button on an activity.

My Fenix 7 had an “Auto Lock during activity”. This would lock the bottoms after 5 seconds of activity, and you had to long hold the buttons to unlock, then stop the activity.

  • OK, I'm not Fenix 8 user, I had Fenix 7, now have Descent 3.
Because I almost not use touch screen and prefer to auto lock my watch all the time, for me it was never a issue.
Maybe you just set in general setting auto lock to whole watch and it partially solve issue for now.
But I agree, "auto lock during activity" should be reintroduced as quite useful for most od people.

  • "When you do screen lock, keys will be also locked." This is completely untrue, why are you saying things that aren't true?

  • Not sure about AUTO, but you can MANUALLY do this.

From memory, it was on the controls menu (long press of light button) out of the box. I've slimmed down my controls menu though.

However I've made a shortcut (settings > system > shortcuts) to lock the buttons. This is called "Lock/unlock device". I think the wording is a bit misleading and unhelpful but it does lock the buttons.

What is then annoying is you get the haptic buzz if a button is then pushed. I don't want to be "notified" if the buttons are pushed but meh, better than something happening without me noticing.

  • Nice one!! I just created a shortcut too. It's an annoying solution, but it works. Hopefully the option to auto lock during activity gets added back

  • Great solution! Thanks.

this is enough that it’ll stop my watch auto stopping when cycling, which used to happen, if my wrist bend presses the stop button accidentally.

until they update the software I’ll just get into the habit of using a new shortcut and doing it manually.
