Some recurring Focus Mode > Voice Alerts no longer working after update to 12.70

After updating to the latest firmware (12.70), my activity voice alerts set up through the Activity profile in the Focus Modes stopped working. They were working on the previous version of the firmware. These are the alerts set up through the following path: Watch Settings > Focus Modes > Activity > Voice Alerts > Pace/Speed Alerts or Heart Rate Alert. I have these set up to 1 minute and 2 minute recurring intervals respectively.

Things I've tried without success to solve this:

  • Turning the entire Focus Mode off and back on
  • Turning the individual recurring alerts off and back on
  • Turning Timer Events, Workout Alerts, Activity Alerts, off and back on
  • Turning the watch itself off and back on
  • Changing the Audio Output setting between Watch or Connected Devices
  • Resetting the entire Focus Mode to "Defaults" and setting up again
  • Setting up alternative activity type Focus Modes that are triggered specifically by the activities I'm doing (Run or Walk)
  • Changing the Alert Tones setting off and back on
  • Last ditch effort of restarting my phone

I should note that it seems there are some other alerts that are in fact working that are triggered by the Lap Alerts. It seems what's not working is triggered by the recurring timed alerts I have set up. Here's some screen shots of my current settings.

I'm not sure what else to try. But this seems like a new bug introduced in the latest firmware since it was working before and suddenly stopped after the update.

I depend on these alerts to aid in my running efficiency. So I need to get them working again.

  • You’re right, it’s a solution. Nevertheless, it’s not at all the same to have an announcement every four to five minutes as it is every minute. Solving the problem remains the only truly effective way.

  • Same issue, FR970. Latest software version. Tried everything. Even resetting watch. Need it working on raceway and preferably yesterday ;-)

  • @garmin-Hannah any news this is very frustrating

  • Re-tested right now: for the weights workouts now the voice output set to connected devices is working fine. Correct language and accent. Tomorrow I will test the audio with my running workout. It looked like a Garmin Connect issue tho, since the audio output of the watch was working fine. ;-)

    1. P.S. I tested the audio even with GC closed and phone screen off. Most probably it will take some time till the CG update will be deployed to all the repositories.
  • @Garmin-Hannah Tested again after Running workout.

For weights workouts it looks like fully working, but during weights I do not stream music with phone and earbuds.

During running I do stream music through phone and earbuds, and I noticed the following:

    • After the first lap I didn't get any notification, nevertheless the watch has shown running data.
    • After synching the phone, I started getting the voice notification at each lap while streaming music.
    • The music sometimes seems to prevail on watch voice notifications (like having the priority): sometimes I get only the last part of the message, like average power data and nothing about HR and lap. Dunnow if this is wanted or not, like some kind of filtering per data relevance.
    • Music volume and voice notification volume are overall the same, while the initial behaviour (when I got the watch, first months of usage) was that the music volume was dynamically lowered while getting the notification. This has changed since one of the latest Android updates, and to be honest, it's not a big deal. Getting notifications at the same volume is definitely better than getting nothing at all.

  • I understand that time is needed to release updates but it has been close to a month with a 12.72 and 15.05 firmware for the 970 since this issue was reported with no resolution or updates on timing. Generally I don't mind waiting but this is core functionality for a Forerunner device - any updates please ?

  • All,

This has been fully investigated, we are waiting for the release of the fix. I cannot provide a date or timeline as software updates can always change.

  • Thanks Hannah,

At least do you know if it’s a question of days or weeks ?

  • Thank you for the update - that is great to hear

  • Does your statement mean :    "Fully investigated" and looking for how to correct the issue, or "fully investigated" and correction will be in place on the next Release?   Please clarify for precise language.
