Some recurring Focus Mode > Voice Alerts no longer working after update to 12.70

After updating to the latest firmware (12.70), my activity voice alerts set up through the Activity profile in the Focus Modes stopped working. They were working on the previous version of the firmware. These are the alerts set up through the following path: Watch Settings > Focus Modes > Activity > Voice Alerts > Pace/Speed Alerts or Heart Rate Alert. I have these set up to 1 minute and 2 minute recurring intervals respectively.

Things I've tried without success to solve this:

  • Turning the entire Focus Mode off and back on
  • Turning the individual recurring alerts off and back on
  • Turning Timer Events, Workout Alerts, Activity Alerts, off and back on
  • Turning the watch itself off and back on
  • Changing the Audio Output setting between Watch or Connected Devices
  • Resetting the entire Focus Mode to "Defaults" and setting up again
  • Setting up alternative activity type Focus Modes that are triggered specifically by the activities I'm doing (Run or Walk)
  • Changing the Alert Tones setting off and back on
  • Last ditch effort of restarting my phone

I should note that it seems there are some other alerts that are in fact working that are triggered by the Lap Alerts. It seems what's not working is triggered by the recurring timed alerts I have set up. Here's some screen shots of my current settings.

I'm not sure what else to try. But this seems like a new bug introduced in the latest firmware since it was working before and suddenly stopped after the update.

I depend on these alerts to aid in my running efficiency. So I need to get them working again.

  • @garmin-Hannah any clue when Voice alerts will be back.

  • All,

We are still investigating this, we are hoping for a resolution soon! Thank you.

  • More clarity would be great. Is there any advice in the mean time?

    • Hallo, I am currently reporting a bug on my Fenix 8 51mm after the latest update to 17.30. During workouts, like weights, voice HR prompts are working only if I set the audio output to watch. If I set it to connected devices, sometimes it does not work, sometimes it does, but it speaks English with my mother-language pronunciation... like English, but spoken with Italian accent. Still I didn't test the running workouts, but the last time I went running it didn't work, and audio output was set to connected devices. I swear, I am not joking: this is actually a bug and it is ridiculous as much as it is pathetic at the same time. Actually I don't know if I should laugh or be angry, but as long as the bug is funny in itself, it is also very disappointing. Mostly of the customers start being tired of updates which introduce bugs more than noticeable improvements, also considering the price of these devices. Please, fix it, and stop deploying bugged and senseless updates! Thank you!
  • It seems this still isn't resolved in the new 15.05 firmware ?

  • Hi Hanna,

Any update ? This case has been pending resolution for 1 month. It’s becoming extremely detrimental to our training and races. Fortunately, Apple is far behind you in terms of features, but they are far ahead when it comes to the Apple Watch’s stability and the speed of updates. Please, speed up the fix.

  •  no it's not resolved at all, the problem is that garmin connect (android) yesterday's release 5.17.1 messed things up even further. To hear a voice alert you have to keep your phone screen on, if the phone screen dims and then switches off then voice alerts are gone

EDIT: I rolled back garmin connect to V5.16 and i can get voice alerts, that is, the voice alerts i input whilst creating a workout. (i created a run workout to notify me when HR is between 115 and 130, these type of alert work, i can hear them on my phone or on my headphones if connected) not sure about the voice alerts you input in Activity >  run.

  • Hi iam having the same problem that the voice alerts will only work if the garmin app is open on the phone and showing on the screen this is very annoying in marathons I have done 140 and rely heavily on this information as soon as connect is not showing the voice alerts stop can anyone advise what is happening please Peter

  • we all agree it is a critical function especially for endurance , this should be the focus for a "hot fix" and get it done Like last week.  but it is what it is.  There is a way to get them but its ugly and it annoys me, set Lap Alert on, then set Distance for 0.10 miles, you will hear " Lap xx Time xx.xx HR XXX   VS  HR XX which is much cleaner and what we paid for.
