Garmin 970 Crash and Reboot Issues

Yesterday 6/23 my watch rebooted while starting a run activity (warmup) before a 5k. Fortunately it didn't go into crash mode and rebooted without any issues. This gives me some serious anxiety when this type of crash happens before events. I was glad the watch worked fine for the actual race, but some weird power drops with Stryd occurred.

I also had a major triangle of death happen a few weeks ago that was a pain to get back up and running. Now on every power up I receive a backup notice "backup found ready to apply a backup from your Foreruuner 970, created on 9 June at 12:38am". Makes no sense it's continuously asking to backup an old date.

Is it possible I have a bad apple? I still have the option of replacing the watch for a new one. Thoughts?

  • Probably. It would be great if Garmin actually acknowledged that there is an issue, and actually informed their customers that their brand new €750 device doesn't have a hardware flaw and that they're working on a solution.

  • Curious as i have also reported this and got no offer for a new watch - not that i need one as i expect its a software issue and not hardware.  Sent them the RAm dump as well.

  • Hello, I have an open ticket on this exact same issue for a few weeks now.  Already sent the RAm dump and engineers are working on it.  Feel free to contact me directly if you wish although top be fair I have not had a single issue since i reported it.  Previously I had this occur over 5x, but oddly i did NOT do a software update that i was aware of.

  • I will receive my new replacement tomorrow and keeping my fingers crossed. Expectations aren't high but hopeful. I did ask what was wrong with the watch after the RAM dump file was reviewed and received the following message - Since this is a new model, we would like to exchange it for quality purposes" Makes sense and I'm glad they responded quickly and offered a new replacement. Customer support/service is a huge part of my product selection.

  • What's the RAM dump procedure? Support asked me to do it in a follow up email but haven't heard back.

  • i did it with them on the phone.  It takes like 15 minutes and needs guidance.

  • Same here, 4km run after reboot by itself :(

  • Probably someone could have mentioned this already but there are so many posts about the issues that I might have missed it.

I only get the reboots and crashes when

    1. Watch receives tons of notifications in very short time frame (I've developing iOS app and for debugging purposes I send notifications for events in the background, probably not a realistic scenario but still watch does not handle that gracefully.)

    2. New glances - Having new Running Tolerance, Running Performance and Running Economy in the glances is causing the watch to become extremely slow and crash often, removing the key glances that the new watch brings results in faster watch and less crashes. Great ..

    3. Just while writing this post I've unplugged the watch from charging, it was downloading maps, and it crashed and rebooted.

    4. And of course the speaker pop, its easily reproducible if you turn on the button press sounds, doesn't crash the watch but the pop is extremely annoying ..

Honestly I am hoping that Garmins devs have been working hard on the fixes for the past month..

  • I also had 3 crashes since having the device for just a few days.

The 2 ones I remember are:
    1. Just randomly in the morning after completing the morning report
    2. While scrolling the list of activities

None of the crashes seem to be reproducible every single time.

Besides the crashes and other issues which have been reported it's quite a impressive watch.

  • Same here - several reboots during different activities - very annoying!
