Display turns off

Does anyone else experience the same issue. I just bought th 970; and its display randomly turns off. The device is still functional since I'll click buttons and get haptic feedback, but the screen is completely off. I have to shut off, and back on for the screen to turn on. It especially happens when I keep AOD on. Could this be a software issue?

  • Yes, I have the exact same issue. At least once a day the display goes completely black. Whilst I also still get haptic feedback after button presses the screen never turns on again until I force restart the 970.

  • Happened to me today. Coincidentally it happened while I was on a call with Garmin Customer Support for my sensors issue! So that's been added to my case

  • I'm experiencing the same issue during an activity with route and map: the screen stays black, and the buttons don’t respond. After a few minutes, it starts working again, but then stops once more.
The watch is really unstable, and it sometimes beeps for no apparent reason.

  • Same situation, terrible user experience. When you need to see important messages or other information, it's just black for half a minute. What to do about it? It costs 12.72, I installed it from a computer. I reset it to the original settings, reinstalled the system. Nothing helps. Video

  • Is there ever a response from support? They don't respond to emails, the chat doesn't work.

  • This happened to me 2 days ago during a half marathon race at km 9, and turned back on after a couple minutes.  This wasn't first this had happened to me.  The first time was a couple months ago when I first bought the watch.

Oddly when I hold the "Display" button, the screen turns back on and shows the shortcuts wheel, but that's it.  I couldn't get it to go back to the activity screen which shows pace and HR.  It's incredibly frustrating to buy a $750 watch and have it fail on you during a race.

I reached out to customer support and they requested a video of this happening, even though I told them it doesn't happen all the time and I don't know what triggers the behavior.  Instead of helping me file a software bug for it, he/she just tells me that there's nothing they can do for me until I can force it to happen again and get a video of the watch face blacked out with functioning sensors in the back.

  • Well, I made a video because it happened to me often. But the support didn't want the video, and asked me to send them the watch. So I sent it, they should have it today, I don't know how it will end, but it's very, very sad.

  • This just happened today (on my replaced 970, original faulty one was switched out under warranty a few months back), right at the start of my marathon! I got the performance feedback alert at 1-ish km, holding power button brought up the options like power, etc, but the activity screen was black…

Rebooted and my race resumed (lost 250m running during the reboot) but it was perfect thereafter! First time this has happened to me, I’m wondering if it was because of the rain and my wet sleeve overwhelming the screen, despite screen lock being properly engaged as usual when I started the activity?? Later fw 12.72…
