Sluggish screens on FR970 during running

Today I did a second run with the new FR 970. During a running activity I noticed something compared to the FR 955. When clicking through to the screens, the screens react slowly, sluggishly, jerkily. Not smooth or fast. That is better with the FR 955. Do other runners recognize this too?

I have disabled touch for the running activity so I only use the buttons.

I also notice that saving the activity takes a long time.

Firmware 6.19

  • I also took some videos I'd like to show as well. I described them in a previous response on this thread. Is it okay if I upload those there in addition to the other user. You have my permission to contact me by email.

  • Let's be real, the hardware/CPU in the 970 is dire. Trying to use maps on this when running in the mountains, compared to my older and cheaper Suunto is such a disappointing experience... So slow and laggy, bordering on unusable. Hopefully they can improve via firmware, but I'm not optimistic.

  • I confirm that saving activity after a long run or bike ride takes a very long time, it's quite irritating

  • I just wanted to chime in because I’m experiencing exactly the same sluggishness with the FR970 that others here are describing — something I never had when using the 965.

Scrolling through albums in Spotify is flat-out painful; it lags so much you actually wonder if the watch froze.

Zooming on maps is also very sluggish, and making corrections if you’ve accidentally picked the wrong route is frustratingly slow.
I really don’t get how the “top” model could perform worse in these essential everyday tasks than its predecessor. Garmin, is this by design? Or is there something we can do (settings, firmware, etc.) to restore the responsiveness the 965 had?

Thanks for hearing me out, hoping for solutions soon.

  • Just got the 970 and i also feel like it's laggy and the maps are unusable.

Panning through data pages is slow! Much worse than my 955 (maybe I should keep it...).

For the life of me I can't get the touch screen to work with maps.

My Display & Brightness settings have touch ON.

My activity focus mode has Touch Lock Off.
My activity focus mode has touch ON.
    I'm running software version 12.72

  • There's another thread about laggy maps where I already posted this but posting here as well for visibility.

I did a few things to try to get my maps to go faster.

I turned off shaded relief layer, I deleted maps and reinstalled from Garmin Express, and I did a force software re-install.

It does seem somewhat faster, but it's still not as useable as the 955 maps. I would use the 970 maps if I got lost, but it's too laggy to use for general trail exploration use cases where I want to be able to continuously pan while following a trail.

    I made a quick demo here: https://youtu.be/F7lw9Q3rqqU

I also got some updates on my touch issue: forums.garmin.com/.../can-t-get-touchscreen-to-work-with-maps-on-forerunner-970

Sounds like when I migrated my settings from the 955 to the 970, there was a setting that turned off touch for all activities, and that setting isn't exposed on the 970, so now my 970 maps are permanently with touch off unless I want to do a hard reset and erase my personal settings / data pages.

  • I dont have that much issues when using maps. And even i don’t experience any crash or sluggishness. I have completed more than 500mi on my fr970 and its going great.

the maps are slow to load but its not terrible.

people complaining about maps they must atleast once update the maps via garmin express via PC.

    that's exactly what I did

to me it's strictly worse than the 955's mapping performance and that's what's disappointing. Yes it can be used, but it was better before. I think it's totally valid to complain about a regression in User Experience for a $$$ watch.

i don’t have issue of sluggish maps. They are slow but not as bad as people claim them to be.

  • Try doing this while running or something similar
