Sluggish screens on FR970 during running

Today I did a second run with the new FR 970. During a running activity I noticed something compared to the FR 955. When clicking through to the screens, the screens react slowly, sluggishly, jerkily. Not smooth or fast. That is better with the FR 955. Do other runners recognize this too?

I have disabled touch for the running activity so I only use the buttons.

I also notice that saving the activity takes a long time.

Firmware 6.19

  • The maps are unusable on my 970.  So slow you cant even use them.  I also find it tried to point me off the path when i am clearly on the path.  It is very strange.  I get it is a new watch but i am also dismayed by how few people report things while I am lurkig in here, so thank you for confiming it is not just me.

So overall I am happy with the watch for its most simplest function, but once i get into features like this i find glaring issues.

  •  I tried uploading the video here, but it won't save to the forum for some reason. Presumably because of the file size. Can you send me an alternate way of getting the video file to you?  It's about 182MB.

What you'll see in the video of me saving my running activity is:

    1. First I record my evaluation data (perceived effort, etc.). This part is fine.
    2. The first part of the problem is what happens next. It starts "saving" the activity.
      • Overall the "Saving" portion displays for about 25 seconds or so.
      • In the middle of the saving, the screen goes black for a moment, after which it continues to save. This was the first time I noticed the screen going black in the middle of saving.
    3. A brief screen then shows for a few seconds confirming the running activity was saved. This part seams reasonable.
    4. Then the second part of the problem starts. It starts "loading" the activity data.
      • The "Loading" screen displays for about 15 seconds.

All in, the saving/loading takes around 45 seconds (not including my evaluation selections), before I can do anything with the watch. This makes for a very poor user experience.

  • I've also created a second video I'd like to send to you of the other area where I'm seeing some pretty bad lag.

What you'll see in my second video is of me loading the "Workouts" app. It's not as dramatic of an issue as when you save an activity, but it's still a long time to wait when all of the other apps in the list open nearly instantaneously.

    1. The problem is with the initial load of the Workouts application.
    2. After hitting the button to open the app, it can take anywhere from about 3 to 5 seconds to display anything.

This gets very annoying when I'm just trying to find out what my workout(s) for the next day is/are.

  • I see in the latest Beta released today it has a line referring to this.

    • Reduces lag when selecting an activity.

    Maybe it helps...

  • For user above, Share a google album link.  My activity saving (even very long runs and interval data from Runna take about 10 seconds.  I have never seen the black screen, just the green loop. And the activity detail screen loads near immediately.  It does sound like your watch is processing a bit longer than normal here.  I wish to record the maps lag and will share a google link as well.

  • I'm running at fw12.72. It seems to be running a bit smoother. Especially without (Spotify) music. I do experience a slight delay with the combination of Stryd fields and music. It's not bothersome yet, since I usually only run with the Stryd Zones Data Field. The most important thing is that I haven't had any crashes so far! Anyway, I think Garmin still hasn't completely fixed the problem. I haven't used a map yet. Hopefully, it will get a bit better, but I'm happy with the 970 for now. But I do use maps every now and then. So it has to be usable!

  • All,

Please UPVOTE ONLY to this if you are seeing a better CPU on the newest beta version 15.05 during longer runs. If you are not seeing it better on 15.05, try to run without using extra features and see if it is better. It sounds like the CPU is being overloaded during a very long run when using a lot more features.

  • Garmin Hannah, I took a video link of the sluggish maps feature, i assume i should post as a separate topic.  Thanks!

  • Full honesty, this message actually kind of scares me a bit. It's starting to sound like Garmin didn't put a powerful enough CPU in their very expensive top-tier running watch, to account for all of the features the watch is supposed to be capable of. I certainly hope there are some optimizations the engineers can put into the code without sacrificing features. As a serious runner, it's been a very frustrating watch to use since the day it was released.

Unfortunately I can't test the beta as I will lose access to the ECG features. My assumption is that there's some sort of regulations or compliance around that decision, so probably nothing that can be done.

  • Hi! Can you upload it here: https://supportforms.garmin.com/en-US/form/file-uploader/ - and can I get with you on email if that is alright?
