Running pace and altitude data fluctuating/pikes

Hello Garmin Support,

I have a Forerunner 965 Software version 24.12, purchased 05/2023.

I’ve been experiencing problems with the altitude and running pace data. I’ve noticed the incorrect data recently. Looking back at the activities it started ~20th August. Around that period I noticed that there was also an Garmin update installed.

The altitude measurement is constantly jumping up & down with variations between ±80 meters. Also while sleeping, see attached screenshot of the watch screen. This leads to highly overestimated height data during trail runs and number of floors climbed (although it’s good for my hill score.)

I also noticed that my running pace is pretty inconsistent over short periods of time, see attached screenshot from Garmin Connect. Strange enough the GPS map plot seems just fine, the pace is not consistent with large variations in speed while I was running in a steady pace.

For running I use the Polar verity sense (Bluetooth sensor) for heartrate tracking.

I’ve already tried the following:

  • Reboot the watch
  • Cleaned barometer sensor port (rinsed in luke/hand warm water with a drop of mild soap)
  • Recalibrate altitude (tried auto and manual)
  • Recalibrate barometer (tried auto and manual)
  • Recalibrate compass
  • Different GPS settings (auto and best performance)
  • Connect to Pc and sync, update latest maps (reboot afterwards)
  • Reset running settings to default

None of the above solved the issues. Since the issues started to occur somewhat after the my watch received an update I’m suspecting its an software issue, although an hardware defect can’t be ruled out off course.

I really like my watch and would be very thankful if there is a fix for this.

Best regards,

Robbert

  • I have a 955 solar and recently the same problem happened to me with the barometer, rinsing it is useless, you have to fill a tray with non-boiling water, I have it set to 40°C, add a little dish soap and mix, leave the watch for about ten minutes, remove it, rinse well and it is as good as new even the case and strap

  • Hi Luca, thanks for your reply and suggestions.

I did try your proposed solution but the problem remained. Tried once again with detached wristband to hopefully increase “waterflow” through the alti/barometer opening. But still to no success. I used water of ~40-45°C and hand dishwash soap and let the watch sit in it for over 15 minutes, then shake the watch a bit in the bowl of water and soap and finally rinse it with some fresh water. All openings in the watch seem to be clean as far as I can judge. Still spikes in height still occur randomly throughout the day with variations up to ~80m.
