Heart Rate Monitoring Issue

Hello, dear forum members!

I’ve encountered an issue and would appreciate your advice. I recently purchased a Forerunner 965, and initially, everything worked perfectly. I primarily do strength training and occasionally run. During the first week, the heart rate readings were accurate: during sets, my heart rate was around 140–160 bpm, and after resting for 1–2 minutes, it gradually dropped to about 120 bpm, at which point I started my next set.

However, strange things started happening after that:

  • During sets, my heart rate often shows 80–100 bpm, which is clearly too low.
  • After a set, sometimes the heart rate increases, but other times it doesn’t change.
  • While resting, my heart rate occasionally drops to 70 bpm, even though I know it’s at least 120 bpm.

Here’s what I’ve tried so far:

  • Adjusting the watch position on my wrist (wearing it higher/lower, tightening/loosening the strap).
  • Restarting the watch (I read that it sometimes helps).
  • Cleaning the back of the watch regularly to avoid dirt or debris.

An interesting observation: when I move the watch on my wrist, the heart rate reading can increase by 1.5 times. For instance, if it shows 80 bpm, moving it higher on my wrist and tightening the strap often results in 130 bpm within a few minutes.

The watch hasn’t been dropped or hit. I suspect this issue might have started after a software update, but I’m not entirely sure.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Any advice on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

  • Here’s an example of how the issue occurs: Video link

This video was taken after a workout set in the gym. Sometimes, the heart rate spikes like this after an exercise, but other times it doesn’t. Similarly, the heart rate occasionally drops very quickly, for example, from 140 bpm to 100 bpm in just 3–5 seconds.

To stabilize the heart rate reading, I often have to adjust the watch position (move it up or down on my wrist), tighten the strap, or loosen it. As seen in the video, these adjustments sometimes help the heart rate normalize, but the inconsistency is frustrating.

Has anyone encountered similar issues or found a solution? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

  • Well, how about this:

While exercising on the treadmill, I noticed the wrong HR  (it's normal on the FR 965…), so I took it off from my wrist and was surprised: the FR 965 continued to show the HR !!! HOW ABOUT THAT ?

  • Well, I'd rather not. This shouldn't happen.

  • Sounds like a common problem on the Epix Gen 2 and Pro models, where bpm registers 20-40 beats lower than it is during activities. Sometimes it catches up, sometimes not. It's hit and miss. And no, there's no fix for it. Garmin apparently sees it as a feature, not a bug.

  • I don't understand why this happened. At first, everything was fine. If they had shown incorrect values from the beginning, I would have assumed they were broken or there was some other problem. I'm blaming the firmware. I want to try rolling back to previous versions and testing that, but something about this idea doesn't sit well with me.

  • Same here with both my Forerunner 965 and my husband’s 955. We both continue to have HR monitoring issues. I set a PR on an hour long bike ride today and my Garmin shows an average HR of 109 bpm. That, along with the terrible sleep monitoring has me regretting that I moved away from Polar. I also have the same issue mentioned below where the watch continues to “record” a HR even when off my wrist for over a minute.
