I thought I'd give some feedback on my experience with the new backup and restore option.
Today I decided to do a full reset of my device. I have a full copy of my Garmin drive on my Mac and I generally used that historically to copy back all my activity settings and the new activities i may have created. Link here to some notes on that process. It did help somewhat , but didn't address the watch settings themselves.
Today when I started the watch after the reset and paired it with my iPhone , it gave me the option to restore from one of the backups made (with the relatively new backup and restore process) , so I decided to try that and see how it worked.
It did the job well. All my activities were there in the correct order with teh specific screens, glances were correct and as fas as I have been able to establish the general watch settings were how I had them. I did have to reload and set up my one IQ watchface I use (Epix2 Pro2 MB which I really like) , music apps etc.
Of course I am one of those people that likes to start from scratch , incremental updates and things sometimes cause issues.
I will continue to keep a device drive backup (copying the entire drive from my Garmin to my Mac) because if something gets corrupted the backup may contain the same issue I guess., but this definitely makes it a lot easier to do a full reset which we seem to need to do more regularly that we may like.
Interestingly recently I've helped a few people on the forum who required an activity.fit file that enabled them to fix some small issues, so having a dump of the device drive is useful.
I hope that is helpful!
