Elevation and altitude wrong

Hello

using my Forerunner 965 since several months, I face some elevation issues (and also altitude issues) since a few weeks (probably since end of February / beginning of March)

Main issue : elevation gain calculated is very overrated.

Last experience : yesterday training around 12,6km run

  • Garmin elevation at the end of the run : +535m
  • Strava elevation corection : +306m
  • Garmin elevation after adjustment with Garmin Connect : +354m
  • Comparison with friends who did the same run : real elevation seems to be around 320 / 350m (COROS + others Garmin)

I know there are still some elevation differences between Strava and Garmin due to different DEM. Also well aware about GPS precision which can affect elevation calculation (even if barometric alimeter must be able to adjust this issue). But clearly, for this run elevation gain is overrated with my Forerunner 965.

For infomation, I recently made a reset + full cleaning of the watch including sensor. I use last beta version software (19.09). Altitude calibration is set on AUTO after each run

My issue is also not always repetable : last Sunday, trail run of 19,2km : Garmin elevation +1150 / Strava +1190. So very good and also realistic by experience as I alreday did several time similar run

Base on this experiences and also after reading some others posts, I don't think my sensor is broken. I suspect more an issue with the software or the algorithme, especially with the temperature sensor.

Does someboby have similar issues and analysis or feedback ?

  • Here below the process described by garmin support in order to reset the 965 :

    - turn off the Forerunner 965

    - maintain the 2 buttons on right side and turn on the watch at the same time (keep maintain the 2 right buttons)

    - 1st BIP : release upper right button

    - 2nd BI¨: release second button (bottom right)

    The watch restarts

You have to fullfil again user paremeters and then let the watch (ON) somewhere outdoor during 15/20 minutes

After that, check with Garmin express any additional software update.

Done with success on my Forerunner 965--> last runs done were OK in term of elevation gain and altitude. No more big differences of altitude from start to end, and global elevation gain OK in comparison with Strava and my colleagues (EPIX for example)

Hope it can help somebody else

Nevertheless, after a try out of the Epix Gen2 Sapphire on several runs, I will sell my forerunner 965 and replace it by an Epix. 965 is a great watch but at same price, Epix is more qualitative

    - more robust (not afraid anymore to scratch the glass)

    - better quality aspect due to metal

    - a little bit heavier but not as much as expected (and with ultrafit band, very confortable)

    - OK, graphism are no so nice compare to 965 ; no animation, no pictures. But so quick on Epix (no lag impression)

    - GPS fix also quicker and better follow-up with same parameters (multi GNSS)

  • Maybe this will Help u. I die it and have no Problems.

  • I do this several times a day yet it still climbs and falls 100s of feet every few hours

  • I reckon it's a software fault as I have had v inaccurate elevations for a year now. Eg. Yesterday (and on many days ) it said I climb only 1 floor when I usually do 10+  ......Amazon wouldn't refund it & garmin doesn't want to know.  Beginning to wander if the fenix watches are more accurate or maybe all watches have issues with elevation. I used to have a Fitbit which was more accurate than this!

  • This is clearly an issue but no Garmin response other than to mod your posts. I wish I could upload my data, tell them where and how much it's off by, and let them see why, because today I woke 300 ft off, then dropped 600ft going downstairs. Out for lunch all over the place, back home 500ft off, recalibrated, 3 hours later it's drifted 350ft off again just moving around the house
