New to running and new to Garmin. Suggested workouts question.

New to running and new to Garmin. Currently using a Forerunner 965 with HRM-Pro Plus. Concurrently using my Apple Watch Ultra 2. My question is regarding the daily workout suggestions on the Forerunner. I’m obese and out of shape. I started out only being able to run/jog 30 seconds at a time, now can run/jog 5 minutes at a time with about a 2-3 minute walk in between. My last workout, I did 5 of these intervals and then walked the rest of a 5K total distance. My Forerunner is suggesting workouts I can’t do. For example, today it suggests a long 62 minute run. I’m using the Run, Track Run, and Treadmill apps for these workouts. Should I be using something else, or will it just not be accurate until I’m doing all running with no intervals? TIA

  • It will take Garmin several weeks to adjust to you. As  you use it more and for tracking and general use it will get better at its suggestions.

1 point I’ll make with the suggest is to also pay attention to the pace and not just the time. While I agree that a 62 minute long run may seems a bit high if the pace was at 20min/mi then it might be closer to a 1 hour walk with some running intervals.

  • Ok thanks. I think today it wanted 14min/mi for 62 min. I’ll keep plugging away and see how it adjusts.

  • I recommend you use the run/walk method for running. See Jeff Gallaway's litterature. On the watch, install the run/walk CIQ data field, this will allow you to configure your run/walk intervals during the suggested workouts.

If you are new to running, run 1mn, walk 1mn. The run would be at the target suggested by the watch. Of course, walking 1mn will have the watch tell you you are going too slow. Just ignore that. Also ignore the poor execution score the watch will give you. This score has no bearing on the quality of your training.

Whan you get more comfortable, increase the running time by 30s blocks. and/or decrease the walking time. I recommend to not go lower than 30s for the walk periods, and to not execeed 4mn of running if your run around 9:30 min/mile.

  • Excellent info! Thanks for the help.
