Structured swim workouts randomly skips rest

On my last two structured swim workouts, the FR965 skipped a few rest intervals of a structured workout.  I'd look at the watch after pressing the lap button to end the work interval, and it has already started the timer for the next work interval.  Completely skipping the rest.

  1. At the end of the last lap of a work interval, press lap button to end the work interval.
  2. EXPECTED: Watch transitions to the next rest interval and counts down to the start of the next work interval.
  3. ACTUAL: Watch shows next work interval, and timer has already started.

These are the exact same workouts that I've been using for years.  First with the FR945 and now FR965.  I've never seen this issue before.  In Garmin Connect you can see the rest intervals with 0 time.  It doesn't happen on the same rest interval.

I'm on software version 8.23.  Countdown start is OFF and Auto rest is OFF.

  • I'm struggling with this too... Which type of rest period do you use? I use "Lap button pressed" and I have to press it (the lap button) two or three times to advance into the next swimming activity. This is annoying (and often causes two consecutive rest periods in the activity) but this way I always know when the activity timer starts.

When I tried to use another type of rest activity (e.g. resting for 10 secs) I experienced the very same behavior you did.

  • I should have clarified.  I am having issues with automatic rests.  I have not had any issues with manual (lap button) rests.

  • Please see Using Pool Swim Workouts to see if any of the tips resolve this. FYI, Auto Rest is going to be disabled during swim workouts.

If the tips do not resolve this concern, please reach out to a Product Support agent directly for the most efficient assistance!

  • I am having same issue, feels like it cropped up during one of the firmware updates. also, at the same time this cropped up, when I add a swim gear to the workout, I will select Pull Buoy and the watch will show a different gear. Same with Fins, or Snorkel

  • Still happening for me on every. single. workout!  It didn't happen last year, so I totally agree that it was introduced with some of the recent updates.

It happened again this morning, and I got an update a few days ago.

Please create a bug report.  Hopefully if enough people create bug reports, it may get addressed.

Structured workouts was a game changer for me, and this is quite frustrating.

  • Happens to me as well with the forerunner 966. At first I was thinking I might have double tapped the lap button, but lately I’m very carefully pressing the lap button and it still happens from time to time.

  • Any update or solution to this bug?

  • I have been dialoging with support on this. They seem resistant to the idea its a software bug, but they are sending me an exchange watch. One solution they told me was to simplify my workouts, because I have long workouts that have repeats within repeats.

  • let's keep hammering support, so they address the issue.

  • I tried to contact the garmin.com support but since I'm not in the US they did not want to help me. I'm currently trying to contact the local garmin distributor
