Forerunner 955 vs 965 in 2024

I read almost all reviews, watched almost all youtube videos, read almost all threads about both watches, but want to hear your thoughts in 2024.

Will be 965 supported by Garmin updates for longer period? (For now they use almost same firmware base, with same features)

Is 955 non-solar worth buying for 200€ less than 965?

Experiences from users that owned both watches?

Thanks on comments.

  • In my experience none that would be relevant. I'm wearing the 965 24/7. I use it for 2-3 hours  training/day of at least hours with GPS Multiband. The battery lasts for 4-5 days. I don't care if it lasts hours more or less...

  • I hate the amoled screen on my 965. The gesture to wake the screen doesn’t work very well for me. Many times, all I see is a black screen, during runs.

Also, I find the battery life disappointing, compared to my old forerunner 935.

After a almost a year with the 965 I do think I should have tried a Coros.

  • Can't agree at all. I am with Forerunner since 920xt. The battery never had been better than with 955/965. I also never see black screens while running and the gesture to wake up the screen works well. So I would suspect that your watch has a general problem or there is an app/ watch face that is causing the problems.

  • No, it's the same for me with gesture and fr965. It forces me to use AOD watchface that in turn burns my battery faaast

  • I have the same experience as MarkusD. Very few problems with gestures either in general use or running etc. Because of that, I don't use AOD at all.

It makes me wonder what could cause the difference. Different arm movement, different kind of running, or what?

  • I have similar experience to you , works well for me.

  • I'm not even talking about gestures during running. That is ok. My problem is with the other 23 hours of the day.

  • That's even more interesting, since the only occasional hiccups with gestures I've experienced are during activities, where arm movements are more erratic. Just out of curiosity, do you use a ConnectIQ watch face or one of the built-in ones (I'm satisfied with one of the built-ins)?

  • CIQ, but it's not really related to that, as the gesture is detected by the watch, not the watchface. The only thing you could argue is the amount of battery used by the AOD. That could be different depending on the WF you use and maybe the settings.

  • Well, it wouldn't hurt to try a built-in face just to be sure. Although not likely, it's not impossible that a ciq watch face running in a bytecode interpreter would wake up differently than a native code built-in face.

Is your problem that the gesture doesn't wake up the watch face at all, or is there just a delay?
