Forerunner 955 vs 965 in 2024

I read almost all reviews, watched almost all youtube videos, read almost all threads about both watches, but want to hear your thoughts in 2024.

Will be 965 supported by Garmin updates for longer period? (For now they use almost same firmware base, with same features)

Is 955 non-solar worth buying for 200€ less than 965?

Experiences from users that owned both watches?

Thanks on comments.

  • I posted in the 955 forum

  • I do not own 955 but I have Fenix 7X Pro Sapphire Solar which kinda compares to the 'screen' technology in the 955 (maybe newer MIB screen so better than 955).

Here are my 2 cents: If the 965 had led light (I heavily use this when running at night) I would not look elsewhere. The solar is not as good as it might sound and does not offer much battery especially in the northern countries. I've found the battery of 965 to be great. I kinda like the accuracy and the temperature of the 5th gen OHR sensor but it is not a deal break for me.

The lightness of the 965 is also great but you have to be more careful when and if hitting the 965. Whereas the Fenix has not a single scratch (I mostly wear it for hike/trail run) the 965 already has a couple.

  • AMOLED display on 965 makes it a clear winner over 955.

Both will probably get s/w support for next 18-24 months, but 965 is a much nicer device to use.

  • That LED is the one thing I miss on my 965!

  • I had fenix6 and now fr965 for half a year. If I would buy now then I would not buy 965 but rather 955 or anything with MIP display. It's so annoying that I either have to do a gesture (which doesn't always work) or touch the screen to see the time. When using AOD then the battery is so bad that I need to charge it too often (reminds me my old fr245)

  • This shows how personal preferences differ. I had a Fenix 5+ and now a 965 also for half a year. And I definitely wouldn't go back to MIP. The readability and resolution of the amoled display is so much better. But it really depends on how and in which kinds of environments and activities you use the watch.

  • If you're planning to wear the watch day-to-day the 965's AMOLED screen is quite nice. I think the glances are easier to read. If you're only planning to wear the watch for workouts the 955 is totally fine. I actually preferred the MIP for outdoor workouts (after using the 965 for a while) but ended up selling the 955 and keeping the 965.

Also FWIW I found the 955 a bit more responsive to button presses and scrolling.

  • I had FR945 and now FR965, there were time when I miss the transreflective display of 945 when try to find what time it is but then again remember how frustrating was not to see the screen because there was not enough light indoor and had to turn back light by gesture or button press.

So, if you work indoor a lot and the light is not so good during the day AMOLED is a must.

I wear glasses +2 for reading and with AMOLED is a little easier to read 4 metric/page while running and the sun is not shining. For transreflective FR945 screen to be easily readable without my glasses the sky need to be clear and the sun shining.

  • I owned the 955 Solar. It was a great watch. However, I have this problem of always having to have the latest gadget. So of course I immediately bought the 965. And what can I say. The 965 is so much better than the 955 - simply because the Amoled display is so much better. Not only does everything look much nicer, it's also much easier to read. And since I'm no longer the youngest and therefore suffer a "little" from long-sightedness, that's an unbeatable argument for me.
Do I miss the solar function? No. In my opinion, nobody really needs it. But it looks very cool and makes you feel a bit better :-)...

  • What is the difference in battery life when using the same watchface on fr955 vs fr965?
