Seems it's been carried over to 18.20
Super frustrating especially trail running and trying to navigate a course when it pushes you onto the road.
Please Garmin, fix this!>>>

…I've now tried both walking and hiking activities with all possible combinations of the general and per-activity "lock on road" setting. I've not been able to switch the lock-on-road off, no matter what…
All,
We are aware and are still investigating. I am very sorry for this disruption, and I will update this thread when a fix is available.
Thanks for confirming this is being investigated.
Just to add it is also a problem for course navigation on FR955.
That's really strange! I checked the beta forums bug reports (now read-only since there is no beta). The status of this bug was changed to "ticket created" a week ago, so Garmin seems to have acknowledged there's something going on.
I'll check again later if the bug persists for me.
I've now tried both walking and hiking activities with all possible combinations of the general and per-activity "lock on road" setting. I've not been able to switch the lock-on-road off, no matter what.
This is especially annoying while hiking, since not all paths/tracks are on the map, and you are often moving off-track. And it makes finding the path more difficult, since the watch now shows that you are on the path, when you actually are 30 meters off, trying to find the bloody thing. And what's worse, you cannot even see where you are on the map, since the locked-onto-path arrow is lying about your position!
Only tested with Walk and Hike, and I only use the global setting, nothing changed in the activities. Track Up is set (instead of North Up). I had the map zoomed into 50m on the marker while testing. I use a Garmin Topo Pro map if that matters.
