18.20/19.18 HR bug still here

  1. Hi, despite the information received from @Garminsierra that the bug was 'probably' fixed in 18.20, I have to say that today  I had a run after a couple of weeks of recovery after a flu and I was running with +30sec X minute slower than my normal pace and HR was around 140 BPM. All of a sudden, out of the blue, without changing my pace despite the very relaxed feeling, HR jumped at 185bpm, that's also exceeding my max HR possible for my age and my training level. I had to deactivate WHR and switching it on immediately after to get it working properly. After further 10 minutes same situation. Now, the thing is, i could also accept this and just don't care about that obvious bug, if not that all statistics are very much dependant by HR. I'm referring to vo2max, performance condition, rest hours, endurance score, suggested daily training etc etc...well Garmin, I'm sure you know that's probably the BIGGEST bug ever since here the whole reliability of the watch is under discussion. this is a sport Watch, probably the best out there, but if HR is not working properly, well, we're far from being an entry level watch. Furthermore, a friend of mine was running with a 69€ watch and HR was just perfect, consistent, stable and reliable.
  • Hi, I'm the one who opened this thread and believe me if I tell you I was very disappointed by this watch and its poor hr sensor...but honestly, since the 18.20 fw release, with a proper wristband fastening, i haven't had problems anymore...my heart rate traces are linear, without sudden drops or spikes and exactly reflect my perception of fatigue. The only extra precaution I use is to tighten the strap a hole tighter than I usually wear it normally. It's no big deal to do this before you start running honestly

  • Thanks for feedback. I am glad they did make some improvement and it works fine for you. Still, judging by the lack of involvement in this issue in Fenix 7 and Epix forums, I am not convinced they fully understand the problem and it is obviously not fully fixed.

  • hello, I noticed everytime someone has raised a HR issue with the forerunner 965 they are referred here. I use a heart rate strap, in fact I have two different ones, a Polar 10 and Garmin HR Pro, and my watch has started given random and innacurate heart rate readings over the past 4 days or so using both straps. I turned off the strap mid run today and used the optical and the HR reading did not change. the numbers are extreme, with one run reading HR in the 160's, and then a subsequent identical run reading around 119. I believe I am on the latest firmware (v18.23) . The last messages on here suggest it seems to have been solved but my problem has only arisen since the last firmware update.

  •          "I turned off the strap mid run today and used the optical and the HR reading did not change."

This sounds to me like the external sensor was not used at all. Did you try to re-pair the H10 with the watch?

I've been using external sensors for ~4 month now (Polar H10 & Verity Sense, both connected via ANT+) and so far I did not notice issues with them.

For me it's the internal OHR sensor which doesn't deliver reliable data since SW 17.xx.

  • yes I repaired the strap, and I know that it was paired then repaired not just by the status icon but by the fact I was receiving GCT Balance metric when it was paired. I have subsequently contact support, they gave me instructions to reset the optical HRM, which I;'ve done, but it is still not working. There is something wrong with the HRM in the watch, irrespective of using optical or strap.

  • The watch does not do any changes to the HR it receives from the strap.
As the Polar is able to send to multiple receivers - i would start Polar Beat or Flow simultaneously with the watch and compare to proof that data.

  • per help desks instructions:

    1. Turn off the wrist-based heart rate monitor:

    Wrist Heart Rate Monitor Settings

    2. Sync the device with Garmin Connect on your mobile,

    3. Hold the power button for 30 seconds,

    4. Leave the device for 10 seconds,

    5. Turn the device back on again (press the power button for up to 2 seconds),

6.. Switch the wrist-based heart rate back on again,

    7. Sync the device with Garmin Connect on your mobile,

    8. Hold the power button for 30 seconds,

    9. Leave the device for 10 seconds,

    10. Turn the device back on again (press the power button for up to 2 seconds),

    11. Sync the device with Garmin Connect Mobile once mor

  • I am going to test with two straps, my apple watch, and polar app on my phone. I don't think the watch is making any changes to either strap (note I have tested both polar and garmin straps), my contention is there is something wrong with the watch itself. I tested the watch optical HR after resetting it and it was still way off.
