18.20/19.18 HR bug still here

  1. Hi, despite the information received from @Garminsierra that the bug was 'probably' fixed in 18.20, I have to say that today  I had a run after a couple of weeks of recovery after a flu and I was running with +30sec X minute slower than my normal pace and HR was around 140 BPM. All of a sudden, out of the blue, without changing my pace despite the very relaxed feeling, HR jumped at 185bpm, that's also exceeding my max HR possible for my age and my training level. I had to deactivate WHR and switching it on immediately after to get it working properly. After further 10 minutes same situation. Now, the thing is, i could also accept this and just don't care about that obvious bug, if not that all statistics are very much dependant by HR. I'm referring to vo2max, performance condition, rest hours, endurance score, suggested daily training etc etc...well Garmin, I'm sure you know that's probably the BIGGEST bug ever since here the whole reliability of the watch is under discussion. this is a sport Watch, probably the best out there, but if HR is not working properly, well, we're far from being an entry level watch. Furthermore, a friend of mine was running with a 69€ watch and HR was just perfect, consistent, stable and reliable.
  • A temporary solution may be to use a heart rate measuring strap. Garmin should solve this problem because a sudden big jump in heart rate is unacceptable.

  • It might be a solution, but the thing is I can't really run with a strap. And, most of all, after having paid 649 euro for the best sport watch out there, I don't want to spend one cent more for a strap because the whr is not working as it should

  • Do you have a Screenshot of this run?

I dont feel confortable when running with a Chest strap. That's why I bought a Polar Verity Sense. An external HR sensor for the upper arm. Absolutely comfortable and you don't even notice when jogging. Very precise, almost like a chest strap, and it has the advantage that the watch can record further training values (such as the lactate threshold).

  • For me 18.20 was a big improvement, pulse is now smooth with no sudden jumps. But I only use wrist pulse for walks and other easy activities, for running etc I use a strap so don't know how it would look there...

  • Here you can see the HR graph; as you can see, I was at around 140 bpm, thats' my average HR when I'm running @ 5:00min/km and then the first peak @185. i stopped the HR and went back to normal but again, after some minutes a sudden increase of HR, this time was about 170bpm. The thing is that if I don't look at the watch, I don't realize something is going wrong, I could have the whole run with the wrong HR data.

  • I had the Garmin 955 solar and now the 965, I have had this issue always from the beginning with both watches. Especially when running I can't use the watch sensor at all and always need the HRM strap. When I am on the bike or Zwift it works perfect (compared directly to the HRM).

Only on cold day when my wrist is also cold it doesn't work on the bike too.

  • Cold weather could affect the led sensors but yesterday it was 15°C so it was definitely not that cold.

  • I looked at Polar Verity Sense...it seems a very good and reliable product; the only con is the price...I don't want to add 80€ to what I've already paid for my watch only to have the HR record my bpm in a proper way...I want it from the sensor of my watch!

  • Just telling you my experience.......for me running is a no go without the strap (unfortunately). I would really like to go for my easy runs without a strap......but I also don't want my stats to be messed up totally.....

.....and I know it can work pretty well(bike/strength etc.....

  • Yes, this bug still remains. I use for running and swimming. Its not cold while running out here in India and hence, I am guessing I have not seen this issue but while swimming (water tempreture is around 15 to 18 degree C), HR suddenly drops. I can hear my palpitation and I know that after a 50 mt. lap with full throttle, my HR is for sure above 140 but watch shows me somewhere around 60 to 70 and at max 80s. And then suddenly, it starts showing 135 to 155 (which is more correct for that time). But for a large portion of my 1 hr session, the HR remained around 70s. I am super sure that with laps IN and laps OUT, I cannot be at 70s. ANd this screws my endurance score, Aerobic and Anarobic readings, Intensity Mins, Recover Time etc. And I cannot wear the chest belt everyday in pool as its recommended. Not sure, when will this HR bug be fixed.
