Intensity minutes

I changed my FitBit Charge 5 for a Forerunner 965. Whilst it has some great features I can’t for the life of me understand why it doesn’t record the minutes in all 5 of the HR zones (like FitBit).

All minutes above Zone 1 are important to an individual’s health. But, it’s only possible to collect data in any 2 HR zones! Why not record all minutes in all zones and let users select which they wish to monitor?

The Forerunner is only designed to achieve the oft quoted reference to 150 minutes of moderate, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week.

  • I personally let the watch decide my intensity minutes automatically, but as far as I know, if you set them based on heart rate zones, you'll choose the lowest zone that gives any intensity minutes, and the lowest zone that starts giving "vigorous" (double) minutes. So if you set the first one to zone 1, I imagine you'll get minutes for any zone. And then you can yourself decide when they start to get doubled. And you can set the weekly target to any number of minutes you wish.

    Thanks for the fiddly suggestion.
Within a recorded activity the time spent in each HR zone is displayed, so why can’t these data be displayed in the Weekly Intensity Minute Goal?

I’m sure this can be done if Garmin wished to do it.

  • Probably because by default the intensity minutes are not based on zones, out even just heart rate: "Intensity minutes are earned based on your current heart rate when compared to your average resting heart rate or the number of steps taken per minute.  Your age, weight, height, and resting heart rate calculated by your Garmin devices also factor into intensity minutes." support.garmin.com/.../
