Which Data Recording Mode and GPS Mode do you use?

Hi All,

Just wondering what most people use for both the Data Recording Mode and also the GPS Mode.

I've generally left the Data Mode as Auto rather than every second and the GPS on auto too.

Is there much benefit to changing these, much in it for accuracy of the GPS route recoded or it is marginal gains?

Thanks all!

Cheers,

Andy D.

  • Also, it's good to know that certain sensors automatically turn on every second recording. For example, I keep the every second recording off in my settings, but since I wear HRM Pro+ during running, all my running activities still record everything every second

That's interesting information I was not aware of.

  • Also, it's good to know that certain sensors automatically turn on every second recording.

But is it true? And which “everything”

Gps determines location every second and could save that location to the fit file every second, depending on a setting.

An hrm pro+ measures heart rate and movement. It could be every second and writes this data to the fit file. But there is no setting.

If (and that is a big if) using a hrm pro+ overwrite the setting how often the location is written to the fit file, that would be in a manual, or it would be a bug. Or it just doesn’t happen. That last part would be easy to see if you inspect the fit file.

  • @Elbo, I now had time to check this. On my 965, I have set recording to "smart", not "every second". When I wear my HRM Pro+ while running, the resulting FIT file does have GPS position stored for every second (and the positions are different for each second). So clearly some accessories override the watch setting (and I had this on my Fenix 5+ as well, so it's not related to one watch model only).

And although I know you love to complain about Garmin bugs, please do not report this as such, because I really like it the way it is. Slight smile It allows me to get every second recording on runs (when I wear HRM Pro+), but still conserve some imaginary battery while walking and hiking. (And I don't think it's a bug, it's just a minor detail they have not mentioned in the accessory manuals.)

  •  No worries. I don't have a HRM Pro+ (I use a tri) , but do have gps recording on 1 second. So for me, everything is fine. I only complain about bugs that.. bug me ;)

    Thanks for investigating!

  • I bought my fr255 for the muli-band option which I use exclusively. Set your watch to 1 second recording. Run a course where you run on one side of road in one direction and then other side in other direction. You will see a difference in gps mode chosen. Alt+muli-band is always the cleanest. It also gives now useable live pace...which none of my previous garmin watches could do.
