Why Training Readiness should also take into account the body battery level.

I really like the Training Readiness score! It provide a comprehensive compounded image of your body state. Well... almost.

Why? I discovered it in the last weeks as I was in my next marathon preparation. It's pretty crazy these days at work and most of the time, I get back home completely drained mentally and physically... and my training readiness is in the upper zone!

So why is is? Pretty simple in fact.

Currently, the one parameter that would factor this state of feeling drained out is HRV. But the problem is that it only gets evaluated during the preceding night which then does not  account for the cumulative fatigue of the day, which makes it growingly irrelevant as the day progresses.

Garmin is not ready to have the HRV periodically refreshed during the day? No problem::body battery! But it's not currently in the list of parameters that forms the training readiness. Thus this post: Garmin should add the body battery as another parameter to determine the training readiness!

You thought?

  • Seems like a good suggestion.  Although- body battery is probably calculated using HRV and Stress.  And the Stress score is based on HRV.  And body battery is based on Stress.  so- it might just be a duplication of measures already being used for training readiness.

  • There is a differences. As I mention, HRV is only calculated during the night where the body battery is updated all day long, thus my suggestion.

  • The HRV that’s reported in the HRV widget is yes, only using HRV measured during sleep.  But then what metric is being used to measure your stress level all day long?  My assumption has been that that’s HRV.  It just doesn’t go into the widget.

  • As per Garmin documentation, the body battery is derived from HRV, stress and activity.

    1. The HRV is calculated during the night while sleep mode is on. In fact, you’ll never see its value change during the day. So, you will never have the training readiness change because of it, as the day progresses.
    2. Stress and activity level do accumulate during the day, thus my suggestion of using the body battery as an additional parameter to be even more reflective of your readiness
