Always On Display During Activities Never Dimming

Just upgraded from a 955 to a 965 for the obvious reason of the screen.  I have my settings to have Always on Display always on during activities.  I don't mind charging more often for this.  But what I also noticed is that similar in it's home state, the watch still dims/times out during a run.  The gesture setting is still on, but I really hate the gesture setting as I run with my watch on the inside of the wrist not on top and even if I did wear it on top gesturing to better see the screen to check data is just annoying.

I understand why this is case, to save battery life, but is there an option to always have the brightest display and it never time out while in an activity?  if not, I might have to go back to my 955 as this doesn't make sense to me and is a bit annoying.

Thanks all!

  • No. There is no setting to change this. There are what I would consider "obvious" things that Garmin doesn't enable that I consider baffling. This is one of them. The other one is that when following a workout, there is no way to disable the high/low alerts. This is insane to me.

Say you are doing a heart rate targeted workout. When you first start running, clearly your heart rate is going to be below the target for a while. The watch will happily buzz and make a sound to let you know you're out of the zone. *** itself is when you are at the point in the run where you are just straddling the target zone. The watch will bing bong and buzz nonstop during this time. Bonkers design.

  • Thanks for the reply.  Couldn't agree more on that one.  I use it for Pace Alerts, and I input them more as a workout reminder more than I do a constant buzzing reminder that I'm took quick...or more likely too slow.

  • Hi . this is exactly what I noticed during my first run today and it really annoys me. even if the display is always on, it dims slightly and it is not easy to see. I hope an update will fix it soon

  • There is nothing to fix. This is how it should be in Garmins design. It's been the same on the epix for over a year now.

And I think it will also be the same on the Epix Pro that should be released in a month or so.

  • Fenix 6 and Forreruner 955 always have the display turned on at max, so there is a lot to fix

  • Well, the first fix for F6 and f955 would be an upgrade to Amoled....

  • This is for Garmin not a bug, it is unfortunately by design (possibly to prevent the amoled display from burn in?). Same thing with the Epix 2.

  • the data is constantly changing, it is not a static image. that shouldn't be a problem. If they don't solve it within half a year, I'm definitely going to fenix 7 Smile

  • Please report it to https://support.garmin.com/, otherwise this will never change.

  • the big difference between epix and forerunner is that the former was probably targeted to outdoor activities where it could make sense to check the display just sometimes and you can use a gesture for that

in contrast, the forerunner can be used for a wide variety of activities (because it is lighter and slimmer) where you cannot use a gesture (e.g. rowing) _and_ it could be crucial to check your HR frequently

for those scenarios, the new forerunner series is basically unusable
