No update of weather

Hi!

On my device weather widget is showing last updated yesterday.
There's an exclamation mark sector on top and when touching it it gives a screen saying "Waiting for data" and GC symbol is shown.
I've synced watch manually on device by phone and wifi and also synced vie GC app on my iPhone.
Same result, no updated weather information.
Am I doing something wrong?

Best

Oliver

  • Mine is fine on iOS Running iOS 16.5 or 16.6 beta with GC App 4.67.2.2

GC App open , Connection to phone Bluetooth, Location Services for GC app on Always, Location set to phone Location in GC App

  • Mine is not with iOS 16.5 with always the latest version of the gc app.

Great that people tell they never have any problem, but that doesn’t really do something for people who do experience problems,

That can be frustrating. But at least S.M.R. is giving you a potential solution. I've had the same issue in the past. The fix was to do exactly this.

GC App open , Connection to phone Bluetooth, Location Services for GC app on Always, Location set to phone Location in GC App
  • My aim was to give the settings and app versions I was using, hoping that that may highlight some differences.

I have had some issues previously and i mentioned the settings i am using now that works.

I have also completely removed the FR from BT settings , deleted GC app completely from the phone restarted both Watch and phone , reinstalled GC app and signed in to GC account , reset-up the GC App settings with iPhone incl location on Always etc , then re-paired the phone.

    Good luck!

  • Actually it is quite contrary, your watch will only sync via Wifi automatically after an activity, and when you tell it to manually, so this is maybe 1-2 times per day, for a few seconds. If you have a permanent bluetooth connection going to your phone (even if it is low energy), this takes more energy from your watch in total (not to mention from your phone). But both of these battery drains are insignificant compared to display and gps, so it is a moot point.

From a software design stand-point, Wifi sync should work exactly the same as bluetooth sync, transfering all the information from/to the watch. If you are connecting to the internet, why not get everything done? Who knows if/when you get your next chance to connect via bluetooth, maybe this user doesn't have bluetooth enabled on his smartphone most of the time? This is already mostly the case, except for a few edge cases like weather. There is no logical reason for this to be necessary.

  • For getting weather updates over wifi, 1-2 times a day is not sufficient. The widget gives hourly forecasts, so updating needs to happen more often (Garmin's own pages say "Weather data is requested once every 20 minutes at most."

So getting weather over wifi would require negotiating the wifi connection constantly over and over again (compared to the bluetooth connection, which is on all the time). When idle, Bluetooth LE uses very little energy ("In the idle state, the BLE device isn’t doing anything, so it’s mostly in low power or sleep mode. The current draw can be very low, often in the microamp (µA) range, sometimes even less." https://novelbits.io/ble-power-consumption-optimization/).

But as you wrote, this is a moot point, since Garmin has decided how the watch works. Slight smile It's ok to have different opinions on whether the solution they selected is optimal or not.

  • Like I said, it doesn’t work most of the time, and sometimes it works.
Syncing works fine for workouts. Bluetooth connection works better than with my previous watch.
So, I think my settings are fine and the app is running.

  • Yes I see your point, updating weather very regularly will give better (more up-to-date) results, but if I sync via Wifi it could just download the current prediction (as it does also when you sync via bluetooth), even on a hourly level. This is exactly as if I had synced once via bluetooth then turned off the phone (or the bluetooth).

For me weather is mostly just for the morning report to show some temperature min/max and rain or sunshine - which would be completely adequate to use the sync of some-time during last day. Right now it just displays question marks... It makes no logical sense to me to not sync that data when you sync via Wifi, you have the connection to the internet, there is absolutely no disadvantage of taking this data.
