No update of weather

Hi!

On my device weather widget is showing last updated yesterday.
There's an exclamation mark sector on top and when touching it it gives a screen saying "Waiting for data" and GC symbol is shown.
I've synced watch manually on device by phone and wifi and also synced vie GC app on my iPhone.
Same result, no updated weather information.
Am I doing something wrong?

Have you the location settings for the GC app set to Always On on the iPhone settings?

And the GC app is in the background on the iPhone , not closed

Yes, all fine from settings.
Meanwhile it was refreshed a 2:02 PM.
Hopefully a temporary issue only.

Happens quite a lot.

The bluetooth connection between my watch and my iPhone is now more stable (than with my previous watch, a forerunner 935) and syncing is a lot faster.

But getting the actual weather to my watch doesn’t work a lot of the time.

Looks like a bug, I have the same issue and it barely auto syncs the weather. Even opening the app and do a sync doesn‘t update weather data.
It helps when i switch off bluetooth on my phone for some seconds and turn it on again - after that also the weather gets updated.

It also seems that weather is never synced via WiFi - at least I only get question marks for the weather on my morning reports when I haven't synced via bluetooth for a while.

This is meantioned as a requirement for getting weather on the watch: "Confirm the Garmin device is paired and connected to the phone through the Garmin Connect app"

Yes, but it is a poor design choice. There is no reason why the watch cannot get any weather information through Wifi. The phone also just pulls this information from the internet...

It's almost surely a question of energy consumption. Wifi uses a lot more energy than Bluetooth LE (Low Energy). So (since the watch is expected to be connected to a phone most of the time anyway), it's better to let the phone take the extra energy hit of using wifi or mobile data to connect to the internet and query the weather. The watch only has to maintain the Bluetooth LE connection to the phone, which uses very little energy.

The watches have wifi capabilities mainly because transferring large amounts of data over Bluetooth is terribly slow. That's why music sync and map download are done over wifi. I think they also allow wifi sync of activities because those might be big depending on their duration, although syncing activities over wifi will definitely drain the battery more than bluetooth sync over the phone.
