955 vs 965

Perhaps I am wrong, but the 955 and 965 seem to share the same internal guts. Except for the different screen and a larger housing for a slightly bigger battery to compensate for the screen change.

They both seem to have the same sensor.  Less than a year between them so definitely not a full redesign, seems more likely a cost savings measure or supply chain problem with the screen for the 945.

When I saw it I got excited it might be a sensor upgrade or at least add the ECG found on the Venu 2 Plus form last year (sometimes the mic and speaker on the Venu 2 Plus would be nice to for a quick response without grabbing my phone especially if it worked over an LTE/5G model).

At least with no internal changes to the unit, it can run the same software as the 955, which is already deep into the bug fixes (which often take over a year to get stable), though as history has shown there will likely be something purely software that the 965 will have or get that the 955 won't.

I was surprised that with all of the battery times they list on the page (with the broken battery details link), not a single time for all day Ox and/or with always on screen. I know the 945 gets about 1/3rd its battery life with the always on Ox sensor enabled. Though even with it disabled it never comes close to advertised.

Anyone have thoughts or more info?

  • Then don’t buy it then. Why complain about a watch you’re not interested in and has nothing more to offer you over your preferred version?

  • I think adding amoled doesn’t make a sportwatch better, but it makes it more expensive. But I fear in 1 or 2 years time there isn’t a cheaper screen option any more.
  • Elbo have you personally ever tried garmin MIP  vs AMOLED?

I realize I don’t compared garmin mips vs amoled, but I did compare iPhone amoled vs mips. iPhone amoled is regarded as pretty good and bright.

Reading the time on my iPhone in full sunlight isn’t a problem. But looking at the map is difficult. Especially with sunglasses. That was also a problem on a samsung amoled I used to have, but that was ages ago. The iPhone is quite new.

Now, I hope you are willing to tell. When you say you have no problems at all with amoled, do you look at a screen with 3 or 4 metrics? Or do you look at the maps?
(The navigation feature is one of the most important features for me, because I trail a lot in unknown areas)

  • My use case is that I’m primarily a distance runner at 40 to 60 MPW all of that outdoors. I have a coach and I run in a group of local sub-elites and I target one major marathon per year or similar big event plus numerous other races along the way. So I train outdoors (wearing sunglasses as needed) in all kinds of weather and in various places locally and across the country or even some international events. I’m also an avid golfer, semi regular lift weights, about once per month road bike (with my Edge 520) and other random activities like snowboarding, kayak, hike, pickelball, etc.

Given all of the above, I almost never use my 945LTE anymore. Because my EPIX works great for almost all of my running needs (including maps / navigation as I train in new places while traveling around). About the only remaining use-case for 945LTE is a long solo run without my phone (which I absolutely hate to carry a phone and that would be a last resort). For me the LTE safety feature is useful - in case I get lost or hurt or bonk and need a ride or whatever. My EPIX doesn’t have that, otherwise I’d get rid of 945LTE and never use a MIP watch again.

I also like that EPIX tracks all my vital health metric (not steps and stairs!!! That’s not exercise !!!) like sleep and rest and 24x7 heart rate. So my garmin is a tool to track not just my training but also my recovery. And EPIX display is just so much better for all around usage, it has just enough “smart watch” features that I actually have an Apple Watch 7 that sits unused in a drawer.

  • As anyone upgraded from the 955 to 965?
I had the 945 lte which I loved but missed touch for the maps.
Innitialy I was keen on 955 solar but then discovered 965.
I don't have my watch connected full time with the watch, nor I use music, just for run, walk, some navigation on hikes. For bike I have the 1040 solar.
If I could get similar battery as the 955 guess it could do.
I am more concerned about durability in long term either from OLED screen or battery (more charges)
