955 vs 965

Perhaps I am wrong, but the 955 and 965 seem to share the same internal guts. Except for the different screen and a larger housing for a slightly bigger battery to compensate for the screen change.

They both seem to have the same sensor.  Less than a year between them so definitely not a full redesign, seems more likely a cost savings measure or supply chain problem with the screen for the 945.

When I saw it I got excited it might be a sensor upgrade or at least add the ECG found on the Venu 2 Plus form last year (sometimes the mic and speaker on the Venu 2 Plus would be nice to for a quick response without grabbing my phone especially if it worked over an LTE/5G model).

At least with no internal changes to the unit, it can run the same software as the 955, which is already deep into the bug fixes (which often take over a year to get stable), though as history has shown there will likely be something purely software that the 965 will have or get that the 955 won't.

I was surprised that with all of the battery times they list on the page (with the broken battery details link), not a single time for all day Ox and/or with always on screen. I know the 945 gets about 1/3rd its battery life with the always on Ox sensor enabled. Though even with it disabled it never comes close to advertised.

Anyone have thoughts or more info?

  • A number of reviews on YT , DC Rainmaker etc (take them with a pinch of salt, but still some useful info)

  • My thoughts is that they released 955 AMOLED. Feels like similar case with 945 LTE.

  • I just hope that MIP will not be discontinued in future and AMOLED and MIP will continue in parallel. Would be great to have display size of 965 with MIP display.

  • Is there a video showing the 965 screen in full sunlight? Not at sunrise or sunset, not under the shade of a tree, not indoors, but in full sunlight.

I haven't seen a single image in these conditions, and I've already watched several videos (Japanese videos, dcrainmaker, desfit, etc...).

Because if this watch is a 955 (with all the bugs it has) with an amoled screen and it's not going to look good in full sunlight... it's not for me.

  • Visibility looked ok, but what I've read, in always on mode the display is in low light mode and the gesture is necessary to increase the brightness. Then for example biking and having watch on hand it's necessary to lift the hand for gesture recognition and increasing the brighness. In case of full brightness, always on (I don't know if this combination is available) and e.g. map for navigation (I use very very often) the battery life goes down quite quickly and I'll we curious if in these conditions battery life would be at least 8 hours.

  • I read a review on a dutch tech site (not a sport gadget review site like dcrainmaker)

They noticed the overall batterylife of the 965 is less than the 955, as expected due to the amoled display.

But the battery consumption during a sport acivity with gps of the 965 was actually less than the 955.

This could be due to new sensors/chips. But those are unlikely, we would have heard about new gps chips, or new ohr sensor.  So it's probably due to software optimalisations.

These software optimalisations could, in theory, be backported to the 955, but I think that's not expected (and if garmin does backport, you never know wich bugs they add on the way)

(btw, why on earth do you want all day Ox? first, the measuring of Ox with a watch isn't that accurate and second it doesn't say much. It's probably me. I also don't understand why some people want 24/7 heartrate on their watchface, of 24/7 vo2max on their watchface).

  • Not to say that the Ox in garmin watches is rubbish compared to a finger specific Ox reader (20€ or less). If someone needs to know their blood oxygen for health reasons, please don't rely on what the watch says.

  • Visibility worries me.

On a dutch tech review site there are some comparison pictures. (text is in dutch)

    https://tweakers.net/reviews/10886/2/garmin-forerunner-965-oled-sportfuncties-en-goede-accuduur-uiterlijk-en-oledscherm.html

scroll down and you see a comparison indoor (at the top) and outdoor.

Indoor the 965 is much better viewable than the 955. But outdoor the 955 is better. This is in wintertime in the Netherlands, so sun is not at it brightest.

It this is how it looks in wintertime, I don't think it is any good in summer.

Also, the watch will be less bright by default and will be brighter when you raise your arm. So it depends on the raise detection, which isn't 100% perfect and on the speed of the light detector and adjust brightness, which is also not 100% perfect.

I think in day to day life, you're going to be annoyed by the amoled screen during sunny days.

(on the other hand, when running in the dark, the raise arm to turn on backlight for the mips display is also not perfect)

But this adds to the other amoled annoyances: it makes the watch way more expensive, it uses more batterylife, we do not know about durability of amoled on watches with burn ins and reduced color after time) and to bright in the dark for some people.

You have to love the added prettyness a lot to favour amoled over mips on a sport watch.

  • Thank you so much. This last image is that i was looking for. Amoled in bright sun is not worth, and Summer is coming :)

  • I agree with you. All the amoled fanboys can say what they want (including dcrainmaker, who as usual has no problems at all) the techtesters with knowledge say a different story and have the pictures to backup their conclusions.
