Vigorous minute calculation has changed in last few months

I had a strangely low vigorous minutes/days that lead me to look at moderate and vigorous minutes, and therefore total intensity minutes.

I've not deliberately changed any HR settings in this time, and it's the same device.

Swimming:

July 9mins Z2, 15 mins Z3 = 23 mins vigorous

October 15 mins Z2, 5 mins Z3, 1 min Z4 = 5 mins moderate, 1 min vigorous

Cycling:

July : 68m Z1, 35m Z2, 9m Z3 = 62 m mod, 12 m vig

Oct : 40m Z1, 125m Z2, 88m Z3, 33m Z4 = 80m mod, 32m vig

Running:

July : 0.5m Z1, 13m Z2, 18m Z3, 11m Z4 = 10m mod, 31m vig

Oct: 0.5m Z1, 3.5m Z2, 5m Z3, 13m Z4 = 6m mod, 11m vig

Between July and October there seems to be a change in how intensity minutes are calculated.

Back in July Z1 and above counted as moderate or vigorous. Now only Z4 seems to be vigorous and some of Z3 moderate.

Is it me, is it a change in the calculation or have I got some duff values in my HR profiles (zones are default, max HR is 220-age).

Was this a default change after a firmware update?

Fwiw I'm on the latest beta firmware, I've never changed that setting, and for me, the setting is still "don't use HR zones".…

  • Isn't it always the way, after posting this I found the page where you can configure if your watch used Automatic or HR Zones for intensity minutes. Mine is set to zones and to use Z3 and Z4.

Was this a default change after a firmware update? Does is make sense that Z3 is mod and Z4 is vigorous? What do others use?

I haven't reset my device to default settings during that time, so I can't say for sure whether the default has changed or not.

It doesn't make sense to me, as it will completely exclude activities like runs which stay in zone 2 or lower (regardless of length), and as you noted, it produces wildly different results in the intensity minutes calculation compared to the default.

e.g. If you run a long Z2 training run for 3 hours as part of marathon training, you will get 0 intensity minutes. From a common sense POV, this is ridiculous. It's as if running easy (or perhaps moderately hard) for 3 hours is no different than sitting on the couch and binge-watching reality TV.

Maybe Garmin thinks it makes sense, idk. For an objective assessment of this, apparently the American Heart Association defines...:

    - moderate exercise intensity as 50% to about 70% of max hr

    - vigorous exercise intensity as 70% to about 85% of max hr

Garmin's default values for zones based on max HR are:

    Z1: 50-60% of max HR

    Z2: 60-70%

    Z3: 70-80%

    Z4: 80-90%

    Z5: 90-100%

By the AHA definition and Garmin's zones definition, moderate should be Z1 and vigorous should be Z3-ish. Having moderate start at Z3 sounds completely wrong to me.

The same page linked above says that moderate aerobic activity includes brisk walking and mowing the lawn. I think if you're in decent shape, it would be pretty tough to hit Z3 during walking and mowing the lawn....

If I were you I'd just change it back to the way it was, or select lower zones.

  • Thanks for the sanity check.

I don't think I changed it, it's recent and I should recall if I did - it would be different if it was years ago Rofl

I put it back to automatic, went for a short tempo run and got what I expected - most of it vigorous and some moderate on the warm up.

My fitness age is what is most impacted by this. Garmin says I have less than 1 vigorous days a week, despite 3 runs, a swim and a cycle.

A few weeks will sort that average out.
