SW 24.12 - no sleep tracking & sleep HR broken

I have auto updates turned off but had to connect my FR955 to the computer to download a workout.  Must have rcvd the update then.  Since then, no sleep tracking.  Daytime HR seems fine, but overnight HR is either absent or spotty or constant for long stretches.  Anyone else?  I've looked through the settings - seems all good - and soft reset twice.  Still no help.  Any ideas what to try next (short of the nuclear, factory reset option)?

  • Just off the chat with Garmin Support (GS).  Told them of the problems I've had recently, documented above.  Response?  Factory reset.  I complained that I've done that a couple of times previously and did not want to lose data as I build toward a race.  Was told factory reset was a required debugging step.  I asked to reinstall the FW.  She said that was impossible.  I pointed out the 'press the upper LH  button multiple times from the correct screen' to get the FW reinstall button.  No subsequent response.  Very unacceptable.

  • Factory reset is such a headache, especially given so many customised settings and configuration.

A back-up and restore might help make this a little easier, but it’s far from perfect.

  • Spoke to John at Garmin customer support.  Validated that my wonky 955 behavior started with the new FW.  He is replacing my device.  That's good b/c it continues to behave poorly, despite a last ditch effort to connect to Garmin Express and accept every update available.  After all of that, I still have the asterisk next to the FW version.  Sounds as if it might be a hardware failure.  This morning, wacky sleep data and after waking up, no HR data.  Interestingly, a soft reset (hold light button until it turns off, then turn on again) seems to make things work OK.  For awhile.  FWIW, I looked for a Gramin alternative.  I need: multisport, mapping and on-the-watch music.  The number of devices that fit this limited criteria and are not Garmin?  Very, very few.

  • So, my replacement FR955 arrived.  Quite a bit of effort to get things set up as before - and more to do.  BUT a couple of odd things...I've been complaining that multisport races do not show up on my old FR955 - at all.  The new FR955 - I did not do anything and those races show up!  So this 'bug' is not specific to the FW (both my old and new FR955 are on 24.12) but ... something else.  The OHR on my old FR955 was pretty unusable.  Out of the box 2.5 years ago it was great, but some FW update borked it.  The new FR955, on the same FW?  OHR looked great today (n=1, I know) on a run with the new FR955.  This does not seem right.  Maybe there is a hardware issue on my old FR955 that makes a difference.  But it can't be the FW only.

THANKS, Garmin, for your willingness to replace a 2.5 y/o FR955.  I am a long time customer (I still have my FR305 (!) and try to use it 1-2x per year for fun).  The prices of new devices are BONKERS.  But maybe those high prices are making replacement of my out-of-warranty FR955 possible?  In any case, I'm hoping that the replacement will get 2+ yrs of useful service before I need to decide what the replacement path will be...

FWIW, sleep tracking and other downstream metrics seem fine on the replacement FR955...Todd
