Roads and paths now murky grey/blue in Running map. Similar to waterways! Unusable when running.

My 955 Solar is currently at Software Version 21.22.

Starting a couple of versions ago, the Running activity map changed style to use pale blue for roads, and dark blue lines for cycle paths.

This is pretty crazy as rivers and other waterways are also blue, and the contrast is also poor, making it hard to see even major roads coming up. The high contrast theme makes things worse, collapsing roads to simple lines.

Previously, footpaths and bike paths were clearly shown as different to roads, and obvious. Now they all look much the same, and hard to see at all. Yet in Hiking mode say, everything is still OK.

There is also a new 'North' indicator coloured russet against a dark grey background, terrible contrast. Good luck making that out while running in rain and dim light.

Garmin, please get some of your developers to try out these changes in the real world before releasing them.

In the meantime, is there any way I can change these things, or do I have to revert the software? (Which I might do anyway as replying/liking Facebook messages no longer works either.)

Interestingly, I tried to do a watch screenshot to show the problem of roads looking pale grey-blue, but in the screenshot they come out a kind of lilac/purple colour which is nothing like the appearance on the watch, but has better contrast (are the developers only using emulators not real watches??):

Here is what it really looks like on the watch:

Can you tell the difference between a) the bike paths fanning out across the park, b) the 4-lane highway, c) residential streets and d) the river? Now try doing so while running...!

I would be pretty happy if I could get the default Map or Hiking theme to appear when running. Why the *** has the Running one changed so much, and for the worse?

Thanks all!

  • PS I started saying bike paths were now dark blue. I think they were for one iteration, but now they're just grey.

  • Please contact Garmin Support and insist that they open a case for this. Maps and navigation are their core business and there are multiple reports about low contrast unusable maps for Fenix 6 and 7 as well. I don't think this problem affects everyone, I think there is a bug with maps. This issue (all roads, tracks and paths were gray) plagued my Fenix 6 after updating maps with Express.

To anyone who is happy with the maps currently on their device: take the time to make a backup of the map files to a computer. It may take and hour (or two) but it may very much be worth it at some later stage.

  • (are the developers only using emulators not real watches??):

That is very likely. As long as QA testers use real hardware during real activities _and_ their feedback is actually used in product refinement, it would not be a problem though.

I would not count on any UI or usability improvents for MIP devices. They only develop/improve for AMOLED devices and likely do not test with them anymore. This is as "good" as it is going to get.

That said, I still think that this map theme issue is a bug because not everyone experiences it. It just has to be fixed. We paid for devices with good maps after all.

  • Thanks for the encouragement. My watch will be out of warranty -- dating to around Sep 2023 -- but that doesn't exclude it from the UK legislation on fitness for purpose, whatever Garmin's guarantees may say. I have no idea whether they have people keeping a close eye on these forums...

Not sure on how close - they mostly react to posts that are about likely hardware failures, to suggest people contact Garmin support in order to have their device replaced by a refurbished unit.

But they will sometimes respond to other issues and help to open a case for a problem. Over the last years, I had one case opened after I wrote about a problem here, which was sort-of resolved by an update, however in a rather lame way (incorrect data on a screen, the screen was removed).

Calling Support by phone often works much faster and better than chat or email.
