Battery life still sucks - 21.19

Hi guys. Some of you wrote that in beta battery life improved. Well, installed firmware 21.19 (finally) with big hopes...and remained disappointed..AGAIN by Garmin.

FIX the damn battery life finally!

I drained it completely (955 Solar), charged to 100% yesterday at 17:30.

Now it is 26 hours later - lost 11%, at 89% with everything turned off on the watch, no phone syncing, checked jet lag, Garmin share, wifi off, phone sync off, sensors scanning off, etc.

After the update turned it off by long press. Twice and then when it depleted. Turned it off today for the third time but it doesn't help a bit.

About year ago the watch drained 6 or max 7% per day...and when they rolled out some firmware version about 5% more per day, don't remember which one. Waiting for more than a year to fix that.

There is no way to come close to advertised battery life since then. I am looking at Enduro 3, but I don't want to pay twice the price and get another set of bugs. I guess that is the tactic.

So are there any users that experience better battery life on final v21.19?

  • count yourself blessed. Slight smile

I usually do the "soft reset" after a FW is installed. (hold down power key) but I don't wait a few monists before re-powering up.

my update was on the phone, but then I had several hiccups updating maps from my Mac.

one thing I should note about my use is I do have gesture for the backlight which means I use a fair bit more than one would running since I am running before dawn typically. and I am sure I may burn a fair bit in the evening hours of the winter with the wrist gesture.

but regardless, you numbers are outstanding. up until this firmware, I felt the "specs" were spot on for the 15 days of smartwatch use and 20 days with solar. I've extrapolated both as achievable previously, but maybe not now. again, I'm probably draining 10% more on FW21 vs FW19. not horrible, but definitely noticeable in my 1.5 charge cycles thus far. I'll live with it but it might be a small nudge in the direction for a 975 pending what that watch ends up being. I'm still not convinced I'm willing to give up my MIPS display. but a flashlight would be a game changer for my lifecycle in ways unrelated to running and hiking (nighttime dog walks and bathroom visits)

  • following up with 2 updates:

    1. beta 21.20 just got released. I figure I'm knee deep in FW21, so I'm installing it.

    2. in reenabling wifi for the update, I realized there is a switch for Garmin Share that was on. I'm going to turn it off and see if that makes a difference.

  • Just installed it two minutes ago.

  • Just installed it two minutes ago.

  • Yes, try with disabled Garmin Share, that was suggested on the forum when previous firmware was released.

I installed https://apps.garmin.com/apps/564f7985-f6ce-4fb8-be36-aa3147d61867 for a watchface. I was looking at Easy Round and some others, but most of them have Time to Recover locked in free version. This one doesn't but it misses altitude option.

Charged this morning at 6 when it was on 20% to 82% and almost 12 hours later it is at 77%.  The watchface changed from stock an hour ago. I was lazy last week.

I don't know if the fix in beta - Connect IQ watch face may crash fixes Connect IQ fields too. My Enduro arrives in a week (small chance on Friday) so I'll be sporting this one + no one's interested in great cheapest 955 solar yet.:) Offered it to a brother as birthday gift, but he doesn't want it, beside Samsung and other analog watches.

  • I'll try out the Garmin Share turned explicitly off. it would be great if that brings me back to 19.18 levels.

yes, Easy Round has a premium pay features (I own it was but got it free as one of the original testers) but you can try it for free for 5-7 days I think to see its battery footprint.

as I have noted previously, battery drain has always been very nonlinear with this watch and other Garmin's I've owned, but 5% for 12 hours is too much for watch face use IMHO.

  • i'm cautiously optimistic 1 day later. after 22 hours, i'm down to 92% but that includes a 50min run that used about 3% (maybe a hair more) + a 20 min strength training session that i realized uses a fair bit of backlight.

for my case, that Garmin Share may have been the elevated burn culprit.

again, cautiously optimistic, because it's way too early to really tell. i'll know better / with more confidence in about a week.

  • Now 1 week.. 58% left - 7 hours of running - 2 sec light turns on when wrist is rotated. GPS automatic and BT is on. Upgraded to beta 21.20 yesterday - I am still a happy owner.

  • that's awesome. are you sure about the 2 second setting. i was all excited when you read your post thinking i could shorten the backlight length, but on "General Use" on my watch i see the minimum is 4 sec. would love to learn if there is some hidden trick to make it shorter and save more battery :)

  • Me...not anymore. It went away under priced. It will probably be missed. Won't have 2 for comparison, but there is one size comparison with pictures on Reddit.
