Battery life still sucks - 21.19

Hi guys. Some of you wrote that in beta battery life improved. Well, installed firmware 21.19 (finally) with big hopes...and remained disappointed..AGAIN by Garmin.

FIX the damn battery life finally!

I drained it completely (955 Solar), charged to 100% yesterday at 17:30.

Now it is 26 hours later - lost 11%, at 89% with everything turned off on the watch, no phone syncing, checked jet lag, Garmin share, wifi off, phone sync off, sensors scanning off, etc.

After the update turned it off by long press. Twice and then when it depleted. Turned it off today for the third time but it doesn't help a bit.

About year ago the watch drained 6 or max 7% per day...and when they rolled out some firmware version about 5% more per day, don't remember which one. Waiting for more than a year to fix that.

There is no way to come close to advertised battery life since then. I am looking at Enduro 3, but I don't want to pay twice the price and get another set of bugs. I guess that is the tactic.

So are there any users that experience better battery life on final v21.19?

  • (aside: that was me logging accidentally into an old Garmin account for some odd reason)

  • Guys just to let you know...I had an opportunity...pulled the trigger and went on an Enduro 3 bandwagon. It happened exactly what I wrote couple of times, about getting new more expensive watch.

If anyone interested in mint condition low priced FR955 Solar...I'll try to get rid of it along with Polar to cover some of the expense. Not financially healthy sport to collect sports watches for me, unlike analog watches. I hope battery will last longer that the FR955's. + now expecting the new set of bugs :)

  • Congratulations! the Enduro 3 looks like a great watch. confession: I've sort of been eying it, but would love to try it on in person but no local stores have it (hoping REI will eventually stock it -- I know I could buy it from Amazon or REI online and return it, but I'd prefer to not go taht route). what's your wrist size? I think the 47mm face is probably about the max my 172mm wrist can hold comfortably for looks and sleeping esp with the Enduro 3 being thicker than the 955. but I'd love to hear your experiences sleeping with it vs the 955 when you get the chance. (maybe direct message me?) enjoy!

  • Thanks. I hope I'll get it during the week. I was worried about size also, but had Suunto 9 Baro previously...that one was heavy and thick to wear during the sleep (and day). 14,4mm FR955 - 15,7mm E3 - 16,8mm S9.  I never measured before, the tape meter shows 185 mm.

  • Hello.
    Me too :(
The battery drains much faster on v21.19. Before I had 7-8 days, now it last only 5 days.

  • It is really weird

My FR955 Solar is not having any issues regarding battery. I charged the watch thursday evening and have been running for 5 hours and 15 minutes and the battery is at 71% - estimated that If I don't do any training i still got 10 days before I need to charge the watch again.

    GPS: 12.00
    WIFI: 28.19
    CIQ: 5.0.2

    WHR: 18.01.06
    ANT/BLE/BT: 28.19
    TSC: 1.14

    WLT: 3.2.8

  • thanks for your data point. which GPS mode are you using for running? what watch face are you using? BT and Wifi on? (I would guess Pulseox is off/manual) any significant solar over those days for you?

at almost 4 days, I'm down 46% right now with the same firmware/versions as you. I have basically zero solar (less than 2k lux-hrs each day). I've run nearly 3.5 hours which roughly reading from my ConnectIQ solar field, I used about 11% for those runs. (hard to get a perfect number since Connect only reports and stores to single percentage digits). I also guesstimate 2% of use during 2hrs of strength training. so that's 33% for just under 4 days (it may lose another % in the next 1.5 hours) at slightly over 8%/day, that is maybe 0.5-1% higher than I would have seen previously on the older firmware. this could be partially due to solar (I don't have any detailed info on what my use was like last December), but I'm pretty sure the drain is elevated because when I use my Battery Monitor widget with this firmware, my total expected life at my overall life is under 10 days (right now 8.6 days). it's almost always been 10 days (except on certain weeks when I have a very long extra activity). during summer and sunny months, I'm more in the 11-12 day range. but certainly 10-11 days was typical over the past 2.5 years.

certainly, it's livable. and I think this is directly attributable to 20.19 vs 19.18. I'm not sure if there is anything else I need to "turn off" relative to the older firmware. I'm not using Garmin Share, and I don't think it should be using anything but maybe I missed it? I also don't see how any of the new other features would use any more battery.

  • My default setting for GPS is Automatic
Watchface is Tones made by VAW.BE
BT and WIFI is allways on
Wrist pulse is allways on (I haven't used my Heart Rate Monitor as the battery ran flat last wednesday).

    I have absolutely ZERO solar

  • wow: you are doing great. Auto GPS drains more for me than my All Satellites setting which I have decided to use. I an only guess that your watch is using "GPS only" most of the time which is very efficient. (2-2.5%/hr in my experience) but even then you watch face looks remarkably efficient. Big Easy (which is in the numbers above) isn't my most efficient face, but it's the one I use because of the large font and all the data I want to see so I've been willing to accept it's limitations and if ever need be miserly (eg. backpacking trip), I can revert to a different face.

  • Yeah it is really weird compared to what I see noted by users.

I am using both an Apple phone for sync. and my windows PC.. When the FW was installed it actually installed the FW twice - first using Iphone and then afterwards using my computer. I allways power off the watch for a minute or two when installation of a FW is completed.
