Export your route to Google Maps

There are many apps that can give you some information about your downloaded route. But it is not what you really would like to use.
I guess everyone like to make their route on Google Maps and the send it to etheir mobile. There you have a big screen, see more ahead, get direction instructions in good time.
Instructions are good - when you can refere to a map. So why can we not have a saved route sent to our mobile? Just like when we in Google Maps creata a route and the send it.

Maybe Google won't open up easily for access to those API needed. But it is worth a try. That would be a good idea for a skilled developer here. I guess the fee for  a payed version with this functionality could be rather high. If it works the price wouldn't be en issue. I just think about me having a long stroll choosing the way as I go. Then the coordinates are stored, but how? In what format and how does thw database table look like? I am quite sure it is compatible with Google Maps. And after it is sent to my mobile via Google, I will have all the options of altering the route and what else you have.

Is there anyone who has some knowledge of how to interact with google i this way? Now it seems that the display on the mobile is from Google so it is working one way. What we need is to have the route sent to your mobile via Google.

I am not a developer of Garmin apps but I guess some have been close to the issue. Plesa let me know!!

  • Thanks a lot! That helped. But it is not possible to move waypoints to change a direction - it seems.
I read that it is possible to get a Google API and enter it. That was my intention; to be able to get the waypoints (and thats ok),
but they can not be used like when you create a route in Google Maps itself. Then it can find the shortest or fastest route.
That was the result I was going for. But maybe I will find out.

I think the Google API can do it, but I am not sure. Here is what I got:

    My Map

  • I have not tested that, but if you look at the list of points of the route, there is an item that is the route itself (not the orange placemarks) and that allows you to move it and modify it as you wish, accounting for the distance of that segment. Also in the menu you have to create routes and directions for driving, bike and walking where you could use what you imported from the 955 as a reference just as an option.

  • Today while reviewing some Segments and Routes for the day I asked myself: for that you want to do, the Garmin Courses tools it's not enough for you? (using GCW connect.garmin.com/.../courses or GCM app, under Training & Planning).

  • I succesfully paired the IOS app Explore and it does exactely the same thing as the EXPLORE.
But it is still a static overlay of wayoints. I can use them as a route to follow,
and I can move (edit) one waypoint at a time only.

When you normally open Googla Maps (GM) and select a starting point and an end point,
GM will show you alternative routes saying this is the same time or a few minutes longer.
I can also insert more points (max 8 I think) in between and when I move one of them
the others will alter the route automatically.

This is only possible wne GM is opened from a link or from scratch at your device.
Then you can crfeate your route with all possible features available.
As I walk or bike, I can even change the route along the way. And this is of course only because GM's algorithms are available. It is a dynamicly interactive display.
If you have waypoints as a layer they will not be included, just static shown.

    A parallelll:
I know this from using different programs when I was (am) sailing.
Every program has it's more or less developed algorithms to work with Routes (the list of waypoints)
and tracks which are static mostly. Though they v¨can be sonverted to route in some nav-programs.

I use a nav-program "OpenCPN" and there you can create GPX files as routes,
but you can not connest them to one route. Then I have to use an old program "Fugawi" which can connect routes.
That is very practical as I via some chosen waypoints follow a roue to a destinatin
depending on if you are northgoing or southgoing but eventually want to arrive at the same harbour.
And surprisingly it overrides or adds this feature to OpenCPN.

In my B&G  plotter however there are functionality that can create autoroutes.
It reads the map compare it to my boats specs and more.
It can even by sensordeta from wind, depth, current, speed, course immidiatly telling my when to tack,
which course to steer and more to reach my destination as fast as possible. Called "SELF-STEER".

So each device has its algorithms available due to the sensor data available.
This is the case with GM too. It is an app which has its special features.

There are many layers to add to your map display. Sometimes even Waypoints can have their own layers
but there is a limit to how the app will handle it. Route, tracks or whatever are consrtucted from wayoints.
If you have a PC connected to you GPS you can see the format of the waypoints running on the display.
Connected to the network of course.
Depending on what system you use the coordinates are the same, but there are in the specific communication
    added other data.

You can compare it to the OSI-model for packing, transmitting and unpacking the data over internet.
That is a model of layers one upon the other where each layer has its own purpose.

    Conclusive:
The conversions of waypoints are just a way to order it in some special file format that your desired app
is able to read and process. Using KML files to GM will just create an overlay, but it will not be processed
as waypoints you crfeate from opening the GM from your PC or your mobile. Thay are handled in a special layer.

So, for what I want to do, I think I need an API-key for GM which is available.
I am still not sure if it will solve the problem. but I looking into it.
Anyhow your references has been a good help on the way.

If you have a Garmin Echomap plotter, you may have more waypoint functionality,
But I couldn't find any useful. And if You appriciate GM functionality it is hard to find in a smaller device than a mobile.

So I hope you understand that Garmins tools are not enough for me.
But without your guidance I would never have found the way to get a GM API key.
It might notg work, but never give up, right!

  • Well, after trying Googles API key administraton, it seems too troublesome and may soon add upp in huge sums because you have to join many different services. It is complicated too. You can not use Babel to show your maps even if it is GM.
I got one key but it it just created an overlay, like before.
Even after using Googla Maps API it was shown as overlay - in Google Maps. Heavy dollar signHeavy dollar sign

I sent a form to the support and explained the dilemma.
But from what I could gather from reading all steps nescessary
it still didn't mention anything about how to create a HTML-map.
I guess it is not possible. When you open GM on your mobile, it is pure HTML code with javascript etc.
And of course they use ASP (Activbe Server Pages) to make it dynamicly interactive and keep the basic code as a framework at the server and add accountspecifics things uploaded when logging in. It saves a lot of traffic. I should have thought about that.,... Nerd

And I guess Google won't let go og these algorithms that are so useful. ;)Tm

So, as you sugget; I have to use what I have. And I always carry my mobile with a batterybank,
so that I can stop and manually change some rouite points if I want. A bit timeconsuming but OK.
And sned it to my Gdrive - HAH....Smile

    Interesting journey however... Steam locomotive
