Export your route to Google Maps

There are many apps that can give you some information about your downloaded route. But it is not what you really would like to use.
I guess everyone like to make their route on Google Maps and the send it to etheir mobile. There you have a big screen, see more ahead, get direction instructions in good time.
Instructions are good - when you can refere to a map. So why can we not have a saved route sent to our mobile? Just like when we in Google Maps creata a route and the send it.

Maybe Google won't open up easily for access to those API needed. But it is worth a try. That would be a good idea for a skilled developer here. I guess the fee for  a payed version with this functionality could be rather high. If it works the price wouldn't be en issue. I just think about me having a long stroll choosing the way as I go. Then the coordinates are stored, but how? In what format and how does thw database table look like? I am quite sure it is compatible with Google Maps. And after it is sent to my mobile via Google, I will have all the options of altering the route and what else you have.

Is there anyone who has some knowledge of how to interact with google i this way? Now it seems that the display on the mobile is from Google so it is working one way. What we need is to have the route sent to your mobile via Google.

I am not a developer of Garmin apps but I guess some have been close to the issue. Plesa let me know!!

  • So why can we not have a saved route sent to our mobile?

You mean, like creating a course with Garmin Connect (Web) and sending it to your compatible Garmin devices?

    https://support.garmin.com/en-US/?faq=tWx3JQyjlU474jqa91EJs8

Hint: You can choose between three different maps there as basis. Google maps is one of them.

  • If I understood correctly what you are looking for you could use, in addition to what  told you, these services:
    https://explore.garmin.com/Map (web or app)
    Also: https://www.komoot.com

  • Google Maps itself doesn't make it easy to export a route as, say, a GPX file. There are browser plugins and websites which claim to be able to do this for you.

Garmin have a route planner in their app and website, or you could use something like plotaroute.com, which can export TCX and FIT files.

  • No, sendinmg from Garmin to Garmin is not the problem. It is easy tio save. The problem is sending a Garmin Route to Google Maps. But unfortunately it can not be saved there and used in Google Maps. Google does not support Routes.

In Google Maps you can create a route and save it in Google or as a link to Google Maps. But you can not let Google track your walking.

So the routes in Garmin is of no use if you would like to export them to Google Maps. Garmin can use Google Maps with overlays, but that is not of any help.

  • Sorry, that will not export any routes to Google Maps.

  • Did you try to export it from Garmin and then convert the Route to some Google format? with for example: www.gpsvisualizer.com/.../
There it should be simple to import into Google My Maps. I actually have several routes like that but Google Maps is the one I use the least (for the watch). Hope it helps.

  • And how do I extract a Gamin route file from your forerunner? This is used by older nav-programs. But there is no way to "import" it into Google Maps. It is not the same as Google Earth. You use Google Maps in Garmin, but your route is just an overlay. But thanks anyway. That was close. I've been using this program many years ago. Different nav-programs uses different file formats.

This is a question of a series of waypoints that you can transfer from one nav-program to another. But not to Google Maps. I was searching on Google for a way to save a route, but there was only the possibility to ave waypoints along thw way. But that ias not practical and it will not autocreate a route.

So the problem is still: The route I see in my Forerunner, how do I extract the data and create a route in Google Maps?.

Instead of guessing, take your smartwatch choose a route and create a link that can show the route in Google Maps.

  • Same, if you ask for help you need at least to try the potential steps instead being rude. My route from 955, 3 clics, 1 minute after in Google Maps without other tools than offered by Garmin. Hope that helps.

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude! I downloaded the Garmin Explorer App and tried to pair it, but it did not work.
But it seems that the EXPLORE site is OK.
What steps to load the routes from my 995?
I will not connect to Garmin Explorer. It only connects to Garmin Connect.

It would be nice to see the link to Google Maps that you created.

    I liv

  • No problem, maybe it was just my misinterpretation, apologies.
Strange, for me works (Android). Likewise my screenshot is from website, more comfortable to do this things.

Please check on the PLANNER OCH ENHETER if you have your device there and press on the SYNC link.
When doing so, if you have routes on your device, after the sync they should show up there. The same with waypoints, courses, etc.
There you will be able to do many things, but what interests you: click on the path you want to export and then on the EXPORT button, which is below your profile image. It will give you the option KML or GPX, obviously KML for Google.

Now you have your KML/KMZ file you can go to My Maps to import it: https://www.google.com/maps/d/?hl=en
There you can create a new map and you will immediately see the new map window and the IMPORT link to do it.
Then in My Maps you have all the tools of Maps to edit it, add information, layers, etc.
