fr955 incorrect elevation readings

My Garmin Forerunner 955 (still under warranty) was sent for service because it did not record the elevation correctly.
Garmin advises the device needs to be rinsed so the little hole where the sensor is does not get clogged. I've rinsed it regularly. I also understand windy conditions, weather and maybe temperature changes may affect the elevation readings. The following activity was in a forest with hardly any wind and the weather didn't change.
The device was eventually returned to me with the diagnosis: "our technician checked, and this unit has no issues. For altimeters you may need to do calibration."
So I calibrated it before last weekend's MTB ride, also wore a Suunto Race watch, and compared Garmin, Suunto and Strava data.
The results seem clear: While the Suunto and Strava elevation profiles are almost identical, the Garmin elevation is not only slightly off, but drifts all over the place and is completely unusable.
Has anyone recently experienced similar issues and what have you done to fix it? Any advice what may be wrong and what I should do about it would be greatly appreciated.

  • I would say it is a faulty device and it was not checked properly at the service.

I recommend to get in touch with the service again and show them the graphs.

  • They will always give you a pithy recommendation to read their manual or other stock troubleshooting pages. Garmin has always refused to address problems or limitations in the hardware/firmware of their devices.

  • Happy to update that after sending it back once more, together with a detailed analysis and explanation of the issue, Garmin provided me a replacement unit under warranty.
