Pool Swim activity. Skipping Lengths and not showing data prior to pause

Pool Swim activity. I stop to adjust goggles or my stroke is slightly off, the watch goes to the next length, skipping the one I'm on. 25 yard pool, I am 250 yards in, stop to adjust goggles, continue on. When I finish my lap, the watch distance shows 325 yard completed. This happens every pool swim, weather I pause to adjust goggles or take a moment to turn at wall. If I pause the watch to adjust goggles to avoid this, the watch shows a new lap when I continue the workout, unable to see my total distances and time, only what I've done since pause and continue point.

  • Hi,

First of all excuse my english (not my native tongue), I'm not an expert swimmer (I just go to the pool 2 times per week), but based on my little experience, I have seen that the algorithm used to count the lengths is EXTREMELY sensitive (maybe beacuse it is the only way the watch has to acknowlege new lengths).

If you stop during the length for any reason, it is GUARANTEED that it will count your distance wrongly, the same if you hesitate during turns at the wall, ecc... If you pause during the length you will have the same problem, because the watch will think that you have completed the full length...

My humble tips, that for now have worked really really well at least for me (the watch is counting correctly every SINGLE length without any error for like over 9 months for now) are:

    - Do not stop during the length

    - Do not hesitate during wall turns

    - If possible glide at least 1-2 seconds after turn

    - Pause only when at the end of the length

    - Use only one single stroke type for the entire length, with no other strange movements that may confuse the watch

    - If you do any drills, use the dedicated drill mode

    - Auto countdown at the beginning of every set is also useful

    Hope it helps.

  • 's response it absolutely correct. The watch uses accelerometers (as all watches for pool swim) to detect lengths, so any acceleration or deceleration will trigger a new length. Regarding not showing the total distances and time rather than interval distance/time, you need to use (or create) a watch screen with the fields "total" distance" and "total time". Try using the scroll buttons as you may already have that by default, but it is easy enough to add. Enjoy!

  • Thank you. During my last swim, I used the advice and it was closer but still off by not nearly by much.

I still am playing with the screens and my main screen show overall time and length. No matter what I do, if I pause the workout, the screen resets to 0 length and 0 time until I hit to continue. The workout shows all the data when finished but no way to tell the overall length or time when paused.

  • That is very strange. Which button do you use to pause, the lap button on the bottom right or the activity/stop button on the top right?

Immediately after you pause, your screen should also change backround color (mine turns from white to black), and then as soon as you start the new lap you should see the play simbol and normal backround again... But all data should not reset to 0 but remain, even during the pause...

  • Also how do you turn at the wall? Flip turn or open turn? I've noticed that (At least for me) the watch recognizes always my open turns, but is not 100% accurate with flip turns, but maybe beacuse I have very bad technique...

  • Maybe could it be that on your data screen you have LAP time and LAP length? This could explain why it resets to 0 after each pause but then shows all the data when you finish... If you already have OVERALL time and OVERALL length then it should absolutely not reset...

  • I used the Activity start/stop to pause. I did edit my data fields to hopefully correct the issue of which data is shown but I haven't tested it yet. I do open turns, no need to be fancy as I will not be flipping in the race Slight smile

    Thank you for the advice

  • It's better to use the lap button (bottom right) for pausing (as you can also read in the swimming activity instructions by Garmin). First push begins the pause (backround should become black), second push restarts the activity (backround should return white)...

I absolutely agree regarding open turns, I have stopped doing flip turns since they often gave me nausea...

By the way if you do open turns, be sure to do a clear turning movement at least with the arm you are wearing your Garmin to let the algorithm of the watch know that you have finished your length and started the new one, so it has a better chance to count your lengths correctly...

  • Thank you so much for all the information Daniele

  • After you select the Pool Swim activity, but before you push the start button, you can scroll up and down to the desired screen with total distance and time you created. When you hit the bottom right pause button, it will likely show your "rest screen" which you can customize (I have last interval distance/time and current heart rate. After you unpause using the bottom right button it will go back to the screen you selected to swim with, but you can scroll through screens during rest and choose which ever you would like to see.
