Non continuous HRV measurements

For about two Weeks I noticed my Forerunner 955 simply stopped measuring HRV in the second half of the night continuously. There sometimes are small measurements and sometimes none at all. I mainly noticed it because my overall HRV Score went way down, as the higher values from the end of the night were missing. I know the HRV Measurements aren't the most accurate to begin with so I usually use them as a very rough guideline, but the score also affects other metrics like training readiness and the suggested workouts. As a result the bad readings are breaking some of my most used features. At first I thought it was because I was wearing the Watch too loosely on my wrist and the sensor didn't make contact, but even with a tighter strap setting the Problem remains. Rebooting the Watch also does not seem to make a difference. I have been on Sofware version 16.17 pretty much since its release, so the problem probably does not come from an update.

Below are the measured Curves where you really see the problem. 1 is a typical reading in the past weeks, 2 is a very extreme case and 3 is a normal reading from before this started. I don't think the Hardware suddenly stopped working, as everything else about the HR Sensor seems to work normally. The bad measurements have persisted long enough now to make me think there is something wrong with either the HRV Measuring itself or the watch thinks I am already awake after 2 AM, as I have had two or three weird sleep measurements as well. Either way both would appear to be software based, so I am wondering of anyone else has experienced this behaviour.

  • I've had similar problems with my 965 lately. No firmware update or anything, just only partial HRV graphs for some nights (in my case this actually erroneously increases my nightly HRV instead of decreasing it). Wearing the strap tighter doesn't seem to affect the thing. But what's really strange is that on some nights the HRV graph is full. And especially that this started to happen suddenly about 3 weeks ago, before that I've never encountered it during the 4 months I've had my 965.

  • I had a similar problem with my 955 a year ago, I had to replace the watch. no problem since then.

  • Very strange. It happening pretty much at the same time seems to be too much of a coincidence. Maybe it really is something software related and it just took a while to manifest.

  • And you also did not have any other problems with the watch apart from the incomplete graph? The HR Sensor worked as it should and everything? Would be a bummer to replace the watch for something so trivial, but it is kind of unavoidable if it really is a hardware problem

  • This originally happened to me in mid-October for a couple of days. Then everything was ok for two weeks, then the HRV graph now again has huge gaps. Today I force-reset the watch, let's see if that changes anything.

  • I just had a look and I also had two bad readings in October. I already had a slightly bad average at the time so I didn't notice. Might be a coincidence, might not. Please keep me posted if the reset solves it!

  • This morning, after yesterday's reset, the HRV graph and readings were normal again. So (hopefully) a software glitch. The new beta firmware seems to have new hr firmware version, so in the best scenario this has been already fixed, it'll be interesting to see. But if it happens again, I'll contact Garmin.

  • Thanks for the update! Maybe I'll wait for the new Software release then and see if it fixes it. Anyway it's good to know that a reset will (probably) fix it.

  • I’ve had the same thing too recently.  I’m at the point where I don’t trust any of the scores or data that is HRV based.   Things like training readiness scores are complete garbage and when it says I’m not ready I’m actually feeling usually really good. The 955 for me is going be a glorified 935 insofar that I will be using it to gather HR and distance/pace data.  The benefit is I use it for music and maps (which is actually why I upgraded).  I’m not impressed with the new sensor tech but battery life is good so no complaints there.

  • Did you try force rebooting the watch by keeping the light button pressed until the watch turns off? For me it resolved the problem and it hasn't come back (at least yet).
