Non continuous HRV measurements

For about two Weeks I noticed my Forerunner 955 simply stopped measuring HRV in the second half of the night continuously. There sometimes are small measurements and sometimes none at all. I mainly noticed it because my overall HRV Score went way down, as the higher values from the end of the night were missing. I know the HRV Measurements aren't the most accurate to begin with so I usually use them as a very rough guideline, but the score also affects other metrics like training readiness and the suggested workouts. As a result the bad readings are breaking some of my most used features. At first I thought it was because I was wearing the Watch too loosely on my wrist and the sensor didn't make contact, but even with a tighter strap setting the Problem remains. Rebooting the Watch also does not seem to make a difference. I have been on Sofware version 16.17 pretty much since its release, so the problem probably does not come from an update.

Below are the measured Curves where you really see the problem. 1 is a typical reading in the past weeks, 2 is a very extreme case and 3 is a normal reading from before this started. I don't think the Hardware suddenly stopped working, as everything else about the HR Sensor seems to work normally. The bad measurements have persisted long enough now to make me think there is something wrong with either the HRV Measuring itself or the watch thinks I am already awake after 2 AM, as I have had two or three weird sleep measurements as well. Either way both would appear to be software based, so I am wondering of anyone else has experienced this behaviour.

  • My last night HRV's. ..

    What a mess!

  • Isn't that the HR graph, not HRV? (Sad graph, anyway.)

Last night I again had some gaps in my HRV, but despite that HR, stress, etc. graphs were complete. And just like last time I experienced this, my average HRV for that night was higher than normally (could be the result of missing low HRV values during the gaps, but it looked like the HRV after the first gap was higher than before, so who knows if the recorded HRV values were glitched as well).

I now force-rebooted the watch just in case, let's see if tomorrow is again normal.

  • Hi ive also got a 955 that is not recording hrv during the night, got a replacement watch from garmin and the same thing is still happening, did you get this issue sorted or did you just give up on it ?,im not sure if i want to go through the process of getting another watch when it might happen again

  • For me, a force reboot solved the issue and it hasn't come back.

  • Hi, sadly I haven't really resolved it. Force reboots don't seem to do anything and I don't think it's a hardware issue, otherwise our replacements surely would have solved it. As I mentioned in this thread the only thing that seems to impact it is the placement of the HR sensor during the night. If I wear it on the upper arm or even higher up on my lower arm the Graph generally looks better but not perfect. I get about 70-90% coverage of the night, so the average does not fluctuate too much. As the HR Graph is and always has been clean I really don't know why this works for me, but that has been my workaround for a while now. As there are multiple threads on this problem with other models like the Epix I really think it is a software bug and apparently other people have already contacted Garmin directly. Someone said it would be fixed in the 2024 Q1 Update, but sadly 18.23 doesn't have any HRV improvements. I read that version 19.xx might be coming out in April, but I don't know if that might finally address it. I don't want to enrol in the beta program for fear of making it worse somehow.

  • Finally Garmin Spain sent me a replacement watch 3 months ago that is working perfectly, updated to 18.22 version (after that, I have disabled automatic updating); now I'm happy with my 955 Solar.

  • Ive tried it on forearm to no avail,i might try it on my upper arm,did you need to change the watch strap to get it to fit, frustrating as the hrv was one of the main reasons i bought the 955, other than that its a cracking watch and im kinda too deep into the garmin ecosystem tbh

  • All,

After investigating a number of user logs among other affected devices, we've determined that the HRV gaps occur when users are laying on their arms or the device. This restricts blood flow, leading to a deterioration in the OHR signal and affects HRV data. We are still working on improvements, but for ideal HRV tracking- we encourage you to take possible necessary steps to avoid sleeping positions which may lead to this outcome.
