PSA: beta 16.09 is out

This update, version 16.09, is a Release Candidate. "Release Candidate" means that this exact software version is planned to “Go Live” as a public update as long as no critical issues are observed. All copies of version 16.09 will be identical, so there are no differences in functionality whether you install version 16.09 as a Public Release Candidate or wait for the update to be a Live public update.

To download this update on the Forerunner 955 Series devices, go to: Main menu > Settings > System > Software Update > Check For Updates

  • I tend to read "Release Candidate" for the 955 as meaning "we're confident enough in this one to release it for the public to try it out." It seems to mean they've added all the features they wanted to do for that release and have done some testing of those, but not necessarily done any real world testing to see if anything's been broken by the changes.

With this firmware I can not user HR Zones widget anymore in my HIIT training, any time I add a 3rd party with it returns to DISTANCE.

How can I downgrade to 15.09?

You can't. Before Garmin released these packages that had the beta firmware and the previous stable firmware and downgrade was possible but you lost all your settings in that. Now with this new system, there is no way to downgrade.

Only possible is that if you have upgraded with PC and you could find the previous firmware in your local files, then use that, but without that, I would say you are SOL.

wherewheredododDo you know what is the folder where the firmware could be located? I'm very frustrated with Garmin, it has very buggy software... and  if I write this to the chat support it says to contact 3rd party developers when the issue is with the firmware....

  • Well you can say to the support that you installed beta firmware that the CIQ is totally broken and it's not because of 3rd party developers, but they probably then say, you did agree to thee terms it being broken when you installed it.

I don't know the location, haven't looked can there be one.. But for maps. it's eg. %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Garmin\express\maps but at least I don't see any previous firmware versions in any folders there.. don't remember have I installed them via that, or it just doesn't cache them.

  • I have a Forerunner 955 and I enrolled in the beta program for that device. At first the watch recognised the beta update and attempted to download / install it a few times, but never successfully. One time, though Garmin Express, I could also see there was an update and attempted to install it, which appeared successful on Garmin Express, but no change or further steps on the watch. Watch is still on 15.19.

When I open the device on Garmin Connect web, it shows "BETA ENROLLED" and "Software is up to date — Version 15.19".

Garmin Connect says there are now updates now.

Watch itself in settings claims "No update available"

How to make it recognise that there is 16.09 to download?

  • The 955 uses delta updates, which means that the upgrade files are smaller, but only contain the differences between one version and the next.

This means that anything lurking in your Garmin Express folders will not be particularly helpful. Delta updates only work one way.

  • It might be that 16.09 has been withdrawn?

  • > It might be that 16.09 has been withdrawn?

I did wonder about that, and was wondering whether anyone else is seeing the same.
  • Ah, yes. The about page mentions that nowadays. Yeah, one would need to have the original image.

I don't know why Garmin doesn't offer the downgrade option, are they like wanting to keep the firmware more secret or what is the idea here.
