955 battery drain - 13.23

I just bought FR955 a few days ago, changing from coros pace2.

After firmware update (from 9.x to 13.23), my watch battery drop 15% per day !!! it's *** suck for the brandnew garmin watch. Is there any 1 have a solution for that ?

I've been read so many thread about FR955 battery drain in this forum and in all of this thread, there is not even 1 official reply or annoucement from garmin team, are you there ? do you have a plan to fix it ? or i have to change back to another brand for better support ?

  • I am seeing this as well, a few days mid day my watch would be dead... no reason or anything.

  • +1, I'm experiencing rapid battery drain, closer to 30% per day. I turned on battery saver at 5% battery remaining. It estimated 2 days of battery, but the watch died in 2 or 3 hours, suggesting the issue is occurring even when battery saver enabled.

  • I don't link to strava but I do have have the live tracking enabled.

I am switching it off to monitor impact on battery.

  • I uninstalled the Komoot App and it improved the battery usage significantly -> Smartwatch mode burned 0.5% per hour. Now it is about 0.3% per hour. Note: I didn't start the Komoot App on the watch for a long time. It means that it must have been activating in the background and using the battery regardless.

The likely reason is that Komoot account is integrated with Garmin Connect so that Komoot can push the courses to the watch. In fact, this is similar to Strava pushing the Live Segments. The underlying problem seems to be that such integrations lead to more Bluetooth traffic between the watch and the phone. Another thing to note is that I didn't use Komoot to create new courses either. The Komoot App probably kept checking for new updates no matter whether there was any activity on my Komoot account.

Turning off automatic updates doesn't make a difference for me.

  • I would like to make a more general comment about this.

Garmin watches have great battery life because their baseline energy usage is very low. There is not much energy consumed by the screen. The communication between the phone and the watch is limited. There are no heavy smartwatch features. The trade-off is that the battery life is very sensitive to software changes - both in the main firmware as well as third-party apps. For example a few extra data transfers over Bluetooth can make a lot of difference. Unfortunately, it is not possible to make every piece of software, every watch face and every app equally energy efficient.

At the end of the day the users need to make a choice - am I willing to sacrifice x% of battery life for a given app? The exact same thing happens on smartphones. We install various apps, some of them run in background and definitely affect the battery life. The impact might be less visible, though. Phones have higher baseline battery usage and we are used to charging them every day anyway.

What Garmin should implement is infrastructure for estimating battery usage and make it visible to the user. I should be able to see which apps/watchfaces consumed battery in the last 24h, last week etc. and how much. I should be able to see how much battery was consumed by my recorded activities. Then users will see what caused battery drain and will make their choices accordingly. Also, the dev team at Garmin will see the impact of their own changes and will be able to find issues earlier.

If you agree, please consider sending the idea through the form: www.garmin.com/.../

  • Yep. Wild, inconsistent battery discharges with this new update. Had been really happy with the watch up to this point, so seems like something they can and need to fix quickly. For example, two nights ago had 2% battery drain, which seems normal, then last night it drops 7%. It's all over the board like this; activities taking more battery then they used to, sometimes it seems normal. And there's the touch screen thing.....ugh. I have reset, don't use Strava Live segments, etc.

  • Same here. Since Update 13.23 much higher battery consumption.

No Strava and no other apps installed.

Before 13.23 about 1 % every 4 hours in Smartwatch mode.

    Now ~ 1% every 2 hours.

  • Interestingly, my watched froze up for some unrelated reason and required a hard restart/power cycle. After the restart, battery drain seems to have gone back to normal.

I was able to power cycle was holding the power button for 2 seconds, and choosing power off in the quick settings. Then waiting a few minutes and pressing the power button again to turn the watch back on. If you hold the power button too long, the emergency assistance feature would toggle.

  • Yes, it's happened me too. I had had an high battery usage, after a sudden reset happened before start an activity battery usage decreased; now the battery usage is 0.3% per hour.

  • After charging and reboot still a higher (nearly double) battery consumption as before 13.23 :-/

    14 hours = 6 % only smartwatch mode.
