HR issue after updating to 13.22

My device finally got pushed the 13.22 update last weekend or so, and since then my heart rate has been recorded erratically. I contacted support and they said that apparently the new results are "as expected for the activity" but you can't tell me that looks correct, especially when I've been having similar results to the first two images for several months since getting the device. Even during some activities, the heart rate will start out as expected and then begin tracking erratically again.

Heart rate seems to track normally outside of activities, but besides "indoor cycling" I haven't tested if the issue persists.

All activities are indoor cycling and I saw no change regarding it or the heart rate sensor on the changelog for 13.22, though I couldn't find other meaningful changelogs.

  • Have you done a soft reset after loading the FW.  Holding down the power button until the unit powers off by itself then waiting 20s or so and restarting. Sometimes it sorts some issues after the FW update.

  • I have a couple times, I also checked to make sure the sensor was clean and visibly undamaged.

  • Hello .  I do see that the agent with who you chatted has submitted a case for investigation of this disruption, so we'll be reaching back out to you once we know more.

We do expect some erratic readings during any type of cycling activity based on the bend in the wrist and how tightly/loosely the watch is being worn, but perhaps not to the extent that you are seeing in your activities after the 13.22 sw update.

Please let us know if you get any more examples of this and I'll make sure to update the case.  Additionally, can you upload the Garmin Folder from your watch using the instructions in the FAQ below?  Once you do so, please tag me in a reply here and I'll update your case.

Sending a Garmin Folder From a Device to Product Support

  • I have uploaded the garmin folder.

  • Just wanted to update that I'm still having the issue or maybe worse. Today I started my workout and literally the entire time it just reported 97bpm, but the sensor appeared to be off: I pulled the watch off my wrist and the sensor light never came on, I checked a couple more times over the course of 10m and still no light or change, so I restarted it. The rest of my workout went basically like it did on the latter part of my last image, it rarely even checked my heart rate for some reason. I can also confirm it has nothing to do with the bend of my wrist and how tight I wear the watch, as even while holding my arm up and hand straight, it still never changed how it was acting.

Either some intentional change was made how heart rate was checked at least for this activity in the last update, making it useless, or the update broke it. I think it's kind of ridiculous that there's no advanced user option to downgrade firmware, at least I can turn auto update off, especially after this experience.  Anyone have any recommendations for a HR monitor? I can't use chest-strap monitors, and preferably one without updates that break it.

  • Thank you .  I have added the folder to the report that the agent submitted for you.

  • I'm not experiencing such a defective HR graph but do feel that HR takes longer to ramp up during a sprint for example.

  • Another update as I was contacted by support. The heart rate does indeed get erratic in other activities (at least, "treadmill" and "walk") and also appears to be erratic during all-day monitoring (though there's no second-by-second graph to easily verify that) when my heart rate is above the ~75bpm it keeps spontaneously dropping to.

I hope this is just a firmware issue and seeing as it worked fine for a couple months and right up before the update to 13.22 and even works fine (rarely) at times afterwards I'm leaning that direction, though I get the feeling a hard reset may be coming soon which would suck, but if it fixed things it'd still be better than dealing with an actual broken sensor around the holidays.

As an aside, I tried an old cheap chest strap HR monitor I had that I thought was broken and it turns out it still works, though it's still annoying to wear (which is why I wanted something other than a chest strap monitor, "can't" was just an exaggeration).

  • I have similar issues since around this update. With any activity and any way the watch is worn. I didn’t have these issues before.

  • Some time ago, my heart rate sensor went crazy (it didn't light up), so I removed the heart rate widget and did a soft restart of the watch. I haven't registered a problem since then. It could be worth the test. For example, my wife also has a 955 and she found that while walking/hiking, when I have the Cardio activity on, I get better heart rate results. So I would try to change the activity type and change the activity in Garmin Connect after finishing.
