Any showstopper issues with 955? Safe to buy? Big disappointments after the first months?

Any big issues with 955 that should prevent me from buying it? I saw some issues with BT and lines on screen, but this seems to be fixed. I' m not happy with GPS of F6 and display of F7 Sapphire is not working for me with the glare and low contrast.

What are be the big pro's of a Fenix 7 compared to a 955 other than Titan case, Sapphire (not for me anyway)? Will the 955 get update for the same time or is this much shorter for the Forerunner series?

  • That is what is puzzling me, either those issues exist in firmware, than all users should be affected. Or some are not really using the features at all and simply do not notice it. I'm also wondering why my F6 shows my age as 42 and a friends FR245 shows his age as 21. Nearly identical values for Vo2max etc.

  • You give the answer yourself on the question why lots of them are still using theirs: "but most of us won't encounter them in normal use."

Quite a few people buy a too expensive garmin and only use a fraction of the basic features and then claim they never encountered a bug.

I guess people who visit forums are not the ones you consider to have normal use. Either heavy users come here to complain, haters to hate and fanboys to deny anything wrong.

    That's an internetforum.

  • Garmin changed the Fitness age calculations a while back which "limits" the positive benefit to 9.5 years (from what I see) . Possibly teh FW of the 245 didnt receive said update or maybe it hasn't been updated  to the latest FW.

  • I'm not saying there's nothing wrong, just that most people won't have noticed. One of the YouTubers I follow is Dave from "Chase the Summit". If there had been a showstopper for his "daily driver" of the FR955, I'm sure he'd have noticed it and mentioned it in his podcast or videos.

I see a lot of people in this thread piling on with "The 955 is the worst ever" but not actually mentioning the problems they're having with it.

As a lightweight running watch with accurate GPS (in multiband) and a long battery life, the Forerunner 955 is great.

I'm not a fanboy. I was particularly upset when wrist-based cadence was broken in the 12.xx software revisions, but to give them their dues it's now fixed.

  • One of the features I use at least twice a week on *all* my past Forerunners is to set a simple interval repeats on the watch.

The fact that 955 crashes are reboots when I try to create a structured interval is as bad as a bug as it gets as I really don't want to be using my phone for simple things like that.

  • Ive never used that but just to test it I went to Run activity and structured workouts and edited it and started it , with no issue my end.

  • To be fair, Garmin acknowledged the bug already to kalamarios. Seems only to happen depending on how your activity is configured.

  • i've had several Garmin watches, and for me, the 955 is certainly no worse than the others. the 945LTE, IMHO was by far the worst. they have only now seemingly crushed some bugs that existed for a year and a half. the current FW 13.22 finally is the watch i am pleased to use without any reservations and limitations.

i can empathize though if a core feature isn't working for some users. that would really frustrate me.

as for other issues, it does seem interactions with one's phone seems to be a wildcard that gives people very different experiences (most notably battery drain issues)

i hope these remaining bugs do get fixed for the atthletes who have been adversely affected.

i do think, whether its the FR or Fenix series, Garmin is known to release their watches with bugs in this day and age of so many features being added. i am not excusing them: just observing that for my recent 935, 945LTE, and 955 watches which i bought within a week of release, i had to live with several bugs (no real showstoppers for my limited needs -- thankfully i avoided the cadence problem because i hadn't updated blindly) until several months later. if one wasn't so bent (like me) on having the latest and greatest, it would probably be wise to wait 9-12 months before buying a Garmin watch so the major bugs can hopefully be worked out.

anyone out there know about bugs with Coros watches? i do know Polar friends who have also experienced buggy watches so i am not sure the grass is greener with the other manufacturers.

  • i'd say there are no showstoppers as such but a lot of issues that may or may not be a big disappointment to you depending on your usage and attention to details. the funtioanlity is generaly very good and mostly works.

battery drain, sync issues, random display errors seem to be common. none stop you using the watch but are serious degradations of service compared to what you expect

  • I would echo what wrote but would like to emphasize the clear lack of attention to details.  If you are someone coming from any Apple product you will be amazed with how many "little" things are "off" or just plain wrong with 955.  It's astonishing in fact how little attention to details Garmin Devs / PMs / TPMs make.
