13.21 (and 13.22) navigation screen issue... again?

Ok, so there is 13.21 firmware.

Main change for me was possibility to pan/zoom from the maps screen directly (as on oryginal Epix). It has been implemented.

But... what then? i cant see possibility to choose to navigate to a point from that screen (like on epix).  So it is still partly useless.

Long press on start button does nothing. Short - changes pan/zoom type.

You can hotkey navigation, but it isnt it.

I am doing something wrong?

I am waiting to get back my epix. If i get it back i can do comparision video.

I was using map pan and zoom few times now, and current state is usable as i wrote before. But i could be better with this possibility.

  • Hi MikeDozer, your video does not show much. You are only tapping or long pressing the touchscreen, but Garmin had never claimed it should work for starting the navigation (at least for 955).

    On the other hand

    - you don't show, how did you get to the map screen

    - you don't show, that long press of START button does not work for you (you cannot select "Go").

  • Actually they do. From the manual:

    Viewing the Map
1 Go outside, and start a GPS activity (Starting an Activity, page 3).
2 Press UP or DOWN to scroll to the map screen.
    3 Hold and select Pan/Zoom.
4 Press START to toggle between panning up and down, panning left and right, or zooming.
NOTE: You can use the buttons or touchscreen to change the map view. The touchscreen is not enabled for
    all activities (
Activities and App Settings, page 97).
5 Press BACK to exit the map view

Saving or Navigating to a Location on the Map
You can select any location on the map. You can save the location or start navigating to it.
1 From the map, select an option:
    • To use the touchscreen, tap the map, tap and drag to position the crosshairs, and press
    UP or DOWN to
    zoom in or out.
    • To use the buttons, hold , select
Pan/Zoom, and press UP or DOWN to zoom in or out.
NOTE: You can press START to toggle between panning up and down, panning left and right, or zooming.

2 Pan and zoom the map to center the location in the crosshairs.
3 Hold START to select the point indicated by the crosshairs.
4 If necessary, select a nearby point of interest.
    5 Select an option:
    • To start navigating to the location, select
    Go.
    • To save the location, select
    Save Location.
    • To view information about the location, select
    Review.

On garmins, holding crosshair was equivalent to holding starton map screen before

So holding start or holding crosshairs does nothing now.

I have shortcut now on long press start to navigation menu as a workaround that is why i didnt record it.

In the end, we want to make garmin watches better, arent we?

  • That's exactly what I am talking about! By "Hold START", it is meant to hold the START button (the upper right physical button on the watch), not the crosshair on the touchscreen.

  • 1) Press start

    2) Choose run activity

    3) Long press Up key, scroll to Navigation and choose Use Map

Here the touch screen plus & minus zoom in and out and the Up and Down keys also zoom in and out (all good)

Pressing Start key changes icons to pan north and south, BUT, these icons on the touch screen still adjust the zoom (issue #1)

And, using the Up and Down keys doesn't pan the map (issue #2) - looking closer each press does pan the map but only a very very small amount (not proportional to the zoom level), so unless you're zoomed in close you wouldn't notice the pan movement.

Then, if you hold the Up key down it starts to increase the rate at which it pans north, but rather quickly and the map rendering doesn't really keep up.  Once you release the Up key the 'new' panning increment remains, moving in large increments with every Up key press (issue #3).  This increment goes back to the very tiny value when you change to East / West panning.

Once you've found the desired destination on the map, a long press of the Start key allow you to navigate (all good)

Once navigating in the Run activity, if you go to the map page and zoom out 2 or 3 times it jumps to somewhere in the sea (issue #4)

Zooming out reveals to be here

  • yup and holding start does not work.

I will try to find some spare time for rec new video later.

  • OK,  I am curious. Also please include all steps, how do you achieve opening the map screen from the watch main screen.
For me, the Go feature after holding START works, but I am still on 13.15.
