HRM-PRO Plus question regarding Running Dynamics, and also more secure fitting.

I have the HRM-Pro Plus and FR955

I have had no issues until today.

During my Race , the strap came loose and I had to stop and put it back on my chest.

Looking at the data after the race, I see it recorded Heart rate (Can't be from the watch as the watch was over a sleeve and earlier in the day before the race in normal watch mode the HR glance showed no HR data. If I "connected" the HRM then it showed HR data).

So how come the HR data was sent to the watch from the HRM but not the RD data?

Is there any way to extract the data from the HRM

As an aside, does anyone have a good way to close the belt clip on the HRM strap so that it doesn't come loose so easily if one has to adjust the belt during a run?

Thanks!

  • I also had a problem with adjusting the chest strap, especially during fast runs. Then the ribcage increases more than usual. I solved it by soaking the entire strap with water beforehand, it softens and holds. Overall, I rate the strap as poor quality. I have HRM PRO

  • Yeah, soaking the strap is what I have to do too, but sometimes not even that is enough. Therefor when doing Taku intervals on assaultbike or elliptical, I use both the Garmin Pro-strap around my chest (well at least that's where it is when the workout begins) and a Polar verity sense, most of the times around my bicep or inside of the forearm.

Hate to say this but I think the reason Garmin nowadays makes the straps AiO is because when it was modular, people replaced the strap with Polar because the HRM-module slotted in just fine, and the Polarstrap is thicker and wider, making it more comfortable and gives it a more secure fit.

  • As a follow up - I did a support case with Garmin regarding the RD data and have sent information to them . Actually looking at this , it recorded RD data on the warmup run and cooldown run both sides of the race , but not the race itself, although it does show the HRM as the sensor.

  • Garmin can consider introducing a suspender as an accessory.

This suspender will go across the shoulder and clips to the chest strap so that it won't fall.

  • So how come the HR data was sent to the watch from the HRM but not the RD data?

Do you configure a data screen to show any RD ?

I have the GCT balance data screen so that I know my HRM Tri is connected to the watch.

  • It's a pity the "lip" at the base of the connecting clip is so small. I think is the "lip" was a bit longer it would also assist in the strap not coming undone if one tries to adjust it whilst using it. In may case I tried to adjust the strap as it was slipping down and that led to it coming unhooked at the same time.

  • Yes I do.  I didn't look at that during the race. As I had a running sleeve on and the watch was on top of it - I did see earlier in the day without the HRM the watch showed no HR, when I connected the HRM it did. I was on the line with Garmin support and I looked at the activities before and after the race (the warm up and cool down) and they both recorded perfectly, so it's interesting as it generally works perfectly.   I sent all the data to Garmin. They do see the sensor showing as connected.

  • sorry to hear about this and hope Garmin can provide some insights into this.

coincidentally, i have been wondering if there is any value in getting an HRM Pro plus... (i have been using standard Garmin HRM straps from over a decade ago for just HR but wondered if any of the dynamics were useful for an older rec runner like myself)

  • Been using the pro and now the pro plus since they came out with my 630 and later watches. I had the HRM run earlier also . I find it interesting to compare the Running  Dynanics data across periods etc . I’m sure they are not all fully accurate but it’s the trend in data that’s is interesting to review especially when one looks back at performances . Being 59 I’ve found it interesting how my age graded performances have improved actually with the level of effort I’ve been putting in and it’s nice to look back and reflect and see how all the stride lengths etc change with different training types etc .

    I’d say it’s worthwhile .

  • thanks for the input (and sorry for sort of hijacking this thread with a side question). i guess i'm a spring chicken at 53, and not nearly as fast nor fit as you. yet, i like data, so i might find the extra metrics interesting to track as you suggest.
