HRM-PRO Plus question regarding Running Dynamics, and also more secure fitting.

I have the HRM-Pro Plus and FR955

I have had no issues until today.

During my Race , the strap came loose and I had to stop and put it back on my chest.

Looking at the data after the race, I see it recorded Heart rate (Can't be from the watch as the watch was over a sleeve and earlier in the day before the race in normal watch mode the HR glance showed no HR data. If I "connected" the HRM then it showed HR data).

So how come the HR data was sent to the watch from the HRM but not the RD data?

Is there any way to extract the data from the HRM

As an aside, does anyone have a good way to close the belt clip on the HRM strap so that it doesn't come loose so easily if one has to adjust the belt during a run?

Thanks!

  • Pleasure. It's always interesting to look at these bits of data and see if it reflects how one "feels".  Enjoy!

  • This is an issue with the 955 ever since the native power update.   Has nothing to do with ill fitting straps.

mine has RD issues all the time.  It seems like it’s an update issue where the watch cant sort itself with the recent addition of the writer based power.

  • My question regarding the strap was the design is really flawed (the clip part) as it is very easy for the piece of the strap to slide off the hook part as the base of the hook is very minimal. In this case I was pushing the strap back up at the back and it came unhooked. Ive worked out that in a race in future I will use some Run bib Take across the strap closure as a security measure,

  • on a whim, i ordered one at the BF sale price on Amazon. i'll be curious how the hook compares with my 7? year old standard Garmin HRM strap (the one where the sensor can be removed). the HRM Pro Plus is not a "need to have" so i'll return it if i don't like the feel/fit/hook system, but i'm hoping it will be a fun upgrade for this slow runner/data geek.

  • That's a great deal for sure! It is probably fine, just one of those days as generally it doesn't worry me...although I must say looking at it on wishes the base of the hook was a bit longer so it would reduce the risk of it coming unhooked.. I used the HRM-PRO for years and it maybe did the same thing once or twice so I suppose its my user error...but still

  • I really like the metrics from the HRM Pro.

The vertical proportion gauge is the one I keep on my watch screen. I can see in real time if I'm inefficiently jumping like a dumb or if I'm efficiently propelling myself foward.

I also have cadence gauge but this one you can have without the HRM.

The others I look after the end of the run.

Looking at left / right balance is a good indicator of technique and to avoid injury from excessive load on one side.

I feel like I'm going in the right direction when I see that in the fastest parts of a run everything changes in the same way. Stride length and cadence increases, vertical proportion and ground contact time decreases. All moving in synergy for an efficient running.

When you are looking at the dynamics in connect app you can click for more details and Garmin explanations on each metrics e some help interpretating them.

  • thanks for sharing your experiences. i'll be getting mine later this week and i'll give it a try and see how inefficient i am :)

  • So... i have used the HRM Pro Plus for a couple of weeks and here are my thoughts:

    - the running dynamics are nice additions to what i normally receive from the watch itself although seeing my ground contact imbalance in stark terms (almost 4% total 48/52) was depressing although i know much of that is due to a leg length discrepancy.

    - the running power reported by the strap is about 20 W less than what is recorded by the 955 watch itself.

    - most notably, as much as i thought i was imagining it, i find the strap much less comfortable than my two different generation Garmin HRM straps (5-7 years old each or maybe older).

with that in mind, i am leaning towards returning it to Amazon even though i got the Plus for a great deal. my other two straps (which only do HR) are going strong and i like the fact that even if the straps wear out (they still haven't amazingly!), i can replace the strap and keep the module(s) going. i may change my mind down the road if i ever started swimming again and wanted accurate HR, but i realized today that i just wanted the more comfortable strap to wear and didn't care that much about the extra data)
