FR 955 Series: Training effect calculation is wrong AFTER 12.23 software (may include 12.27 and 13.15 sw)

At the request of duplicate the topic here - from the beta 12.2 forum!
Instead of fixing the problem, Garmin is engaging in bureaucracy!

Because some of you have reported seeing this on the latest(non-beta) production software, let's please have you start a thread in the main forum for this device:

Training effect calculation is wrong! After the update, this indicator began to be considered incorrect relative to the past similar workouts.

Today, August 22, there was a training session. The workout was in zone 1 with an average heart rate of 135 bpm. Training Effect wrote that he trained his lactate threshold well. O_O IS IT? IT'S A JOKE? The run was strictly in zone 1. My lactate threshold in the app is 176! Until update 12.2 and complete data reset from the watch, Incl. there was no such training!

today's training - 24.08.22. what the ***?!?! WTF?! What is another intense workout? what the *** is a vo2max increase?!? It's a Base workout! This was before the update to 12.2. Garmin please take note and fix this ASAP!

  • Why would you think that when the Aerobic effect number is larger than the Anaerobic effect number?

Maybe recording the warm up/cool down separately would have helped this?

  • I don't think the AnTE must be larger than the AeTE:

One of my runs in version 11.12 - AeTE 3,8; AnTE 3,6; Primary benefit - Anaerobic capacity. And it wasn't recorded separately.

I just followed a workout given by Firsbeat (https://www.firstbeatanalytics.com/en/features/workout-labels/)

Anaerobic Extensive intervals 15 x 200m at 105-115%VO2max / 1min active jogging >3.0 Improving Aerobic Fitness >3.0 Improving Economy and Anaerobic Fitness
  • Hello .  You may see a higher Anaerobic and and a lower Aerobic score given if you achieve a lower heart rate between intervals.  I have noticed that when I walk (instead of an active jog recovery) between intervals, I tend to get a higher Anaerobic score.

I suspect that the Tempo label was applied to this activity simply because your heart rate only got down to the Aerobic zone (Z3) in between your intervals, so you were contributing to (at least) aerobic fitness during the entire part (besides warmup and cool down) of the workout.

If you would like additional assistance, please respond to the 3 questions in my previous comment.

  • Hello Kevin, thank you for your answer. It sounds good because I spent almost all the time between intervals in Z3 or even Z4. That can be a reason why I got such a high Aerobic TE too. Next time I will try to walk instead of jogging. Thank you

  • Be sure to let us all know what you find !

  • Hi there Kevin please could you look into this incorrect training effect which still seems an issue despite an apparent fix in new beta release. There are discrepancies between viewing the training effect on the watch immediately post workout then later in Garmin Connect, with two different effects logged

For example I’ve just done another fairly high intensity interval workout including many max anaerobic efforts.
When saving on my watch it said Training Effect- Sprint which seems roughly right

Then when I log into the activity in Connect it shows my heart rate as this, which illustrates frequent efforts up and above threshold

An yet Training effect for the activity in Connect is Base/low intensity , which contradicts the “Sprint” Training Effect that my watch says!!

How can any effort in which Anaerobic effort is undertaken ever be Base low intensity? Anaerobic is high effort by definition!!

All base efforts previously undertaken obviously gave an aerobic score but no anaerobic score which makes sense so why are high efforts now being recorded as base low intensity?!  Please help

    thank you

  • Just curious.

    What's your max HR ?

  • 80% of 180 is 144.

You need to sprint with HR >> 144 BPM to get high anaerobic effect.

Basically you are sprinting at your low aerobic HR.

  • Ah ok but I still wouldn’t expect the activity to be logged as base when im spending the highest amount of time in threshold zone 4? And some in zone 5? Surely it’s Tempo at the very least  rather than base

a run where my heart rate stays solely below 135 zone 2 usually is base/low aerobic with zero anaerobic effect

Also still not sure why  training effect on my watch after completion is different to connect:  sprint vs base/low aerobic
