FR 955 Series Battery Drain after 12.23 sw (possibly due to BT connection)

After installing 12.23, rebooting several times then charging my watch I now see a battery drain of ~5% per hour without any activities. Which is to say my watch will last less than a day if charged 100% and I don’t record any gps activities. I’m on iPhone 12 Pro (iOS 16)

The watch also seems to run significantly slower, hanging between screens.

If you already installed it and found this post, I’m sorry. Upvote or comment and hopefully Garmin will fix this soon. If you haven’t installed it yet, don’t.

UPDATE:

There are currently two options to prevent this issue: 1) disable Bluetooth and manually sync via WiFi. 2) disable Strava live segments in Garmin Connect by going to settings>training>segments> click the 3 dots and switch to garmin segments. This is likely why not all users are seeing the battery drain issue.

  • Possible fix!

I read elsewhere to switch back to Garmin segments and let it sync up.

Did this and instantly better if not fixed!

Have not switched back to Strava segments yet as going to give it 24 hours.

    Fingers crossed

  • Do you have an how to?

  • Garmin connect app.

    Training/segments

Press 3 doors top in screen, select garmin segments.

  • I've tried switching strava segments back on and goes back to battery drain from syncing.  I believe there's the culprit!

No more battery drain using garmin segments but of course this need to be fixed please Garmin.

  • Dear Garmin! (don't know it tagging works here)

Can you guys, PLEASE, gave people Update / Timeframe on resolving the situation...

    1) Is this a Hardware issue? And affected people need to initiate replacement?

    2) If this is 100% Software issue - what Is the time frame of getting it fixed? (Should we wait for new release or do factory reset?)

    3) If affected Customers with do factory reset - should they connect watch to Garmin Express and Update or wait for stable version?

(Or in another words: If I do factory reset now and connect with Garmin Express - what SW is going to be the latest as of today... Can we stop @12.1X ? Or which version is the most stable???

Again, as an athlete who's got everything Garmin and loves Garmin products, I have no doubts that problem will be fixed, but as Main fitness tracker and training companion for Triathlete I need them to work, even right now... (And that is not possible with 8 hours ride and and safety tracking ON at the moment with Battery drain). I am not even talking about turning off phone connectivity on smartwatches in the office because of the issue.

    Thank you

  • Can confirm I see the same behavior. Switching from Strava segments to Garmin segments fixes continual sync which fixes battery drain. Strava live segments is one of my favorite features so please put out a fix for this Garmin Connect Mobile iOS

  • I can confirm turning off Strava Live Segments has resolved the issue for me as well. I of course want to use Strava segments so hopefully this is resolved soon, but this works until we see a patch.

  • I have Strava live segments on. I see approx a 0.6% drain per hour (t over a 1.25-day period with one 1hr activity using multi GPS). Is that deemed excessive? I started at 100% and am at 81% now. I was at about 85% after 24 hours looking at the log I am keeping. So that would indicate approx 6.7 days including one 1-hour full GPS activity a day. I have SPO2 off at the moment.

  • Great tip! I've tried this as well and can confirm switching from Strava to Garmin segments has solved the battery drain issue. I'm still working with Garmin support to rule out any other causes, but the segment change seems to be the primary fix.
