Sleep Tracking errors on 955

The sleep tracking function and therefore all of the training advisories are woefully inaccurate! To the point I'm considering returning the watch. The sleep durations are miles out, the sleep stages are obviously wrong. My watch and connect are showing different times/data and despite setting normal sleep start/finish times the watch thinks lounging on the sofa is 'sleeping'.

How can I sort this functionality / bug out foreword i give up and get my money back?

  • PROPOSAL

Garmin should implement 3 modes for sleep tracking.

Fully auto, semi auto and manual mode for sleep tracking.

Fully auto = Watch will detect sleep automatically.

Semi auto = Watch will detect sleep when near to the configured sleep window. This will eliminate other "sleeping" period.

Manual mode = Watch will detect sleep upon button press from user. This will eliminate other "sleeping" period.

  • Semi auto is the strategy they’re using but doesn’t work for everyone They need to sort this or they risk loosing market share to those who can facilitate scientific training at a personalised level. As it stands the 955, for me at least, has no more exercise functionality than my 735XT

  • Doesn't make sense to let users configure their sleep window if the watch detects sleeping 6-8 hours OUTSIDE of the window.

  • dude,

    1) The same person me worn a 945 for 3 years but didn't encounter this sleep issue.

    2) Look at the posts above. Some other members are not experiencing sleep issues on their old watches.

    3) Considering the tons of bugs on 955, what makes you think this is not another sleep tracking bug? I suspect Garmin is not taking note on the configured sleep window.

    4) So what is the point of configuring the sleep window? Might as well take it out.

    5) Read my proposal in the next post.

    1) Yes.You wear new ones 955 now instead 945? And now you have the sleep tracking problem at 955 that you didn't have on the 945?

    2) I haven't found any posts where people say, "Yes, I replaced the watch or bought a new one and it solved my sleep tracking problem". Maybe, because the problem is not with the watch, but with the sleep algorithm, which is the same for all Garmin watches?

    3) Yes, maybe. One of them is a failure to update training readiness after editing sleep.

    4) Yes. The sleep window does not seem to affect proper sleep onset. This is the time when the watch is not disturbed by messages, vibras, motion alerts, etc. (sleep mode).

    5) Yes, the manual mode will be helpfull. But I prefer to Garmin fix the bug with Training Readiness after sleep editing first. Because it will be necessary to edit the dream periodically, even with manual mode.

I think you got it wrongly here.

The sleep score is a function of sleep duration and quality.

Even if you edit the time, you don't expect Garmin to be able to record down the deep, light, rem, awake and thus giving out an accurate sleep score.

The sleep algorithm must be able to identify the correct sleep window first.

Thus that is why I suggest to have the fully auto, semi auto and manual mode options.

Let users configure their sleep. It seems the semi auto (user configured sleep time) is NOT working in 955 but it is working on my 945 and Venu SQ as mentioned by a user above.

  • Also to add on, the sleep tracking error could be a contributor for the battery drain issue on 955.

Imagine the watch thinks you are sleeping and starts to record meaningless HRV data.

    Just my 2 cents.

  • Mine seems to match reality to a reasonable extent.

  • Perhaps this information will be useful.

Yesterday I had to do a hard reset of the watch (because of music problems). After the watch's second life, I recovered almost all of my important data using Garmin Connect (training history, load focus, recovery time, recommended load, steps etc). But only not Training Readiness, HRV and Sleep History. Now I will have to start collecting that data from scratch again.

This means Training Readiness with Sleep History and HRV is stored locally in the watch, can be exported to Garmin Connect once, but cannot be downloaded back to the watch. And this is why the sleep editing does not effect the Training Readiness score.

  • By the way, to preserve integrity of data, editing your activity will not change the firstbeat metrics.

So I doubt Garmin will do for the sleep.

  • the sleep editing does not effect the Training Readiness score

Looks like It affects now. Today, when I edited my correct waking moment, the results appeared both on the clock and in the Training Readiness data (sleep score and sleep history graph). The TR score itself has not changed, but my changes were minor and it is already high now. So I can't say for sure whether this bug has been fixed, but it seems that some fixes in this direction are being made by Gramin.
