Garmin and Stryd Power

It is frustrating that the 955 does not support Stryd power natively. As a long term Stryd user I really hoped this would be the breakthrough moment. But no. To add to this frustration, I have now discovered, after working with Garmin support, that the source of the post activity battery drain on the 955 is the Stryd Zone connect IQ data field. So I've had to delete this and now cannot get the Stryd power figures on the 955 at all. So rather than a step forwards, it currently seems the 955 is a step backwards with Stryd compatibility. Hopefully this will all be resolved soon.

  • It is possible to pair as a powermeter, I use it for my Datarun premium datafield to show Stryd powerdata (alongside a lot of other running metrics). Usage of the Stryd datafield on a separate screen is required in that case, for making sure that the footpod data is saved.

If you don't use IQ fields like mine or Run power it makes little sense to connect the Stryd footpod as a powermeter to the watch in the sensor menu.

  • I think Stryd power is natively as long as you don't use the Garmin HR monitor. If you use Garmin HR monitor it generates its own power calculation which is far away from reality.

  • its own power calculation which is far away from reality.

Both are far away from reality, we don't have any backing to say that one is better than other.

I think Stryd power is natively as long as you don't use the Garmin HR monitor.

But yes, remember reading somewhere that pair your Garmin HR as BT, then it doesn't send Running Dynamics and it can't calculate power.

  • Stryd is not natively supported under any circumstances. Stryd chose not to implement the profile.

As far Garmin being far from reality. It is as close as Stryd. You might argue closer as Garmin didn't have the "never change your weight" nonsense.

(I have a Stryd and a 955 - Stryd is unused and had been a while. Pure nonsense from that company)

  • I'm beginning to get to that point with them. I do like their training plans (I followed their Half Marathon plan), however, having a £200 pod that is only being used for Power is a bit excessive, as their Pace and Distance for me was miles off, but it wasn't their pod that was inaccurate, it was everything else (and this is even more apparent now with the improved accuracy of the 955 GPS....I had to set a 104.6 calibration factor on my 945 watch, which was off again as soon as I changed my shoes).

  • At least for me Stryd calculates a CP which is always quite comparable to my cycling FTP. Also if I reenginieer my race times back to W/kg the Stryd values are nearby. Garmin is ca. 1.5 W/kg above.

  • There's no reason why cycling FTP would be similar to running FTP (and for me that's not even the case with Stryd). It's different muscles, and typically more for running.
