Adaptive training for marathon in 6 months time

I am interested in using adaptive training for a marathon in 6 months time. From what i understand (my 955 hasn't arrived yet) if i enter the race in my calendar then the suggested daily workouts will build to that race, allowing for sleep, recovery, etc along the way, including the required elements (long run, speed, easy, recovery etc). Is that true?

I am curious how the plan will look if i start 6 months out, how will it build my mileage, how will it progress long runs, how many long runs, will it limit weekly mileage if it senses i am struggling, will it change interval/tempo pace as i progress?

(I understand i will be able to see a week's worth of forward plan)

Any experience, insights how it will work? Thanks

  • I don't think anyone really knows, as the watch is so new. So you will be our guinea pig. Slight smile

    Good luck!

  • Haha. Maybe one of Garmin's favourite athletes has had one for longer.

Very interested to see how it works, how different from my own plan. Will test it during the less serious build phase (2-3 months).

Watch is arriving today so will post back if i find anything interesting.

  • Keen to hear. I'm going to try it as well when I get my watch. They're as rare as hen's teeth here in Australia. I'm trying to be patient.

  • I have set it up for a Half Marathon which is in about three months . It is nice that we can now see workouts a week ahead , that used to be an irritant that one couldn't see what was planned for the next day in advance.. so that is an improvement.

Looking at the programme so far and my gold pace etc , it seems a bit light but will be interesting to see how it adapts the program over time.

What is disappointing is that one cannot see the planned workouts in the calender (as one can with workouts one sets up ones self) , that would defiantly be a useful addition.

  • First day with the 955. This is what it's saying as far as adaptive training:

My marathon is actually 9 months away so have started early (in my mind 3 months to enjoy the summer, 3 months build, 3 months race specific)

    The plan summary says:

Preparation Phase 21 Jun -16 Oct. All round fitness to benefits to prepare for your upcoming training which begins 6 months before the event.

    Base Phase 17 Oct - 18 Dec.

    Build Phase 19 Dec - 19 Feb

    Peak Phase 20 Feb - 2 Apr

    Taper phase 3 Apr - 15 Apr

The suggested workouts for the next 7 days are:

Rest, Base (43mins), Base (43 mins), Rest, Threshold (37mins with 17mins at 90% MaxHR), Base (30 mins), Long Run (1hr12m)

All seems very sensible given i have just started running again after doing very little since Marathon last April.

  • I've been training for the marathon with my own plan, but leaving the recommendations turned on. Garmin seems pretty close to what I'm doing. I just couldn't trust a marathon plan that I don't have full visibility on

My biggest fear would be accidentally undertraining. I wish it offered some more in-depth settings for how it adapts (aggressive/slow). Sometimes a week of poor sleep is something you have to push through to hit your goal, and there just isn't enough visibility to trust how Garmin would adapt

  • Share your concerns/sentiment completely with visibility and trusting the Garmin process. To see the bones of the key workouts for later stages would help, knowing that they could/should change in time. Calendar view seems essential. Nobody selects a training plan without being able to see the peak weeks.

As modifying steps, does it take notice hitting/missing workouts with targets, does it take into account the feedback scores to trim or push forward? No idea.

At the moment I have nothing to loose, enough curiosity to test and plenty of time to see it evolve.

  • Where the plan summary is visible (I have an Epix, so this functionality may not be there fully).

    PS.

How the adaptive training has been treating you? Do you know how the predicted time is influencing the training and what happens when you surpass said goal in the middle of the preparation? The watch will ease the training or continue to set  it with the general aim of improvement?

  • The plan summary is below the 7 day schedule. Select your race in glances, hit start/stop, hit daily suggestions, scroll down through daily suggestions, select plan overview at the bottom.

I've been using the watch for ~18 days so will do a post what i've seen so far. Cheers

  • Sooo the race glance in Epix has limited functionality as of this moment. No such info here.
